  1. Startup scripts and Group Policy Editor

I run a Network Monitor Gadget on my desktop which loads at startup, as well as a VPN. The monitor always starts before the VPN loads, which forces me to shut off the monitor and restart it to correctly show the VPN IP address. Is there some way I can use the Group Policy Editor 9 I am running Win 11 Pro and place a PowerShell script in the Windows Settings for startup scripts to make sure the VPN starts before the Network Monitor loads? If so, can anyone give me any guidance as to what this script should look like?

    :)

  2. group policy editor

    Hi Tony,

Group Policy Editor in Windows is a tool to help you manage policy settings. Here's how you can access the Local Group Policy Editor:

    • Press Win+R to open Run.
    • Type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.

Let us know how else we can help.

  3. Group Policy Editor does not recognise my Windows Script file

I have created a Windows Script file and saved it successfully with a CMD extension. The file is displayed in Windows Explorer but when I try to add it to the Logon option in Group Policy Editor the file is not listed? Other files in the same folder are
listed although some other files are also not displayed.

    Any advice appreciated.

Startup scripts and Group Policy Editor

Programmatically create machine startup script in local Group Policy: script executes but is not visible in Group Policy Editor

It turns out that local Group Policy Editor gets the list and order of scripts not only from the Registry but also from C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine\Scripts\psScripts.ini. This is almost usual .ini file with some weird features: it should be in UTF-16LE BOM format and can be with both CR+LF and LF line endings (which is rather strange for Windows).

Below you'll find a piece of code to write correct psScripts.ini for adding machine startup script to local Group Policy.
