Steam games in full screen keep resetting to native resolution automatically

I launch game on steam, sometimes full screen, sometimes windowedI switch to full screen because blind. Not zoomed in enough or I want a few extra fps, so I lower resolution.I play for 5-10 mins on the lower resolution.Game automatically resets resolution to native 1920 x 1080p without any reason.Keeps happening in intervals of 5-10 mins no matter how many times I try to change it back.Games in full screen stay at the desired resolution for 5-10 minutes, but then goes back to native resolution automatically without any reason. Here are the things I have tried.Checked to see if the drivers h

Games won't run if not Native Resolution.

"a 4k screen but my card is not powerful enough to run games at this resolution so i opt for 1440p or 1080p

    depending on the best fps."

Win10 has commandeered screen scaling, so the screen scaling options in your graphics processors Control Panel

do nothing on Win10. Meaning you can no longer force full screen, in most cases.

Particularly when using a low resolution that is native to 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratios. Black bars on the side

is the only option in most such games.

Some games will run with black bars all around when using a wide screen res that is lower than the

monitors native res, but will still centered on the screen.

    - A lot depends on the game in question. There seems to be a few variables that result from the games engine.

I don't know why some games would be forced to run in a Window, but I've not used a 4K monitor.

    - There are some games that will run full screen regardless of the resolution you select ( Crysis ).

I assume these games have their own screen scaling override in the games engine.

    - With some others ( MOH-WAW ) you still get full screen if the aspect ratio of a lower resolution

you select is the same as the monitors native aspect ratio .

eg - 1280x720 will run full screen on a monitor with native 1920x1080, as the are both 16:9 aspect ratio.

    - Other than those exceptions, all games will run with the aspect ratio that corresponds to the resolution.

    - I do have some games that will go into Windowed mode if I click on anything while launching the game,

but the game will go back full screen after resetting the option in the games settings. This is not peculiar

to Win10 though. It also happens on Win7.

    - You could try lowering the desktop resolution to that of the games before launching games.

    - I wonder if games that have a borderless Windowed option will run a full screen borderless Window

at a resolution below the monitors native res ?

    - Apparently MS has done this to allow for better scaling when attaching phones and notebooks/tablets to

a Win10 machine. MS keeps trying to dumb Windows down, but as with many past efforts, this makes Windows

less customisable, and doesn't really make using Windows any easier. More problematic if anything, I reckon.

This is just one of several issues that make a lie out of MS's claim that Win10 is the best

    gaming Windows ever.

  3. Steam - Native Resolutions - Windows 10

I have been using two identical monitors for over two years. They are 25" LG Ultra Wide with a native resolution of 2560 x 1080. Everything has worked smoothly since the beginning. During the stay-at-home orders, I made the mistake of playing some mindless
games on Steam. I recently installed and played Fieldrunners 2 on Windows 10 and all my problems began.

    Configuration:

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Super

    LG Ultrawide 25UM58-P x 2

    The Issue:

After playing the game in full screen on Monitor two, the GAME changed the display to 1920 x 1080 for the duration of the game. After the game completed, the resolution of the monitor 2 is still being held at 1920 x 1080. It does not go back to 2560 x
1080 and it no longer offers that resolution as an option. I have spent hours troubleshooting and am at wits end.

    Troubleshooting I have already completed:

    1. Updated windows.

    2. Updated drivers.

    3. Removed display drivers and reinstalled.

    4. Both WINDOWS Display Setting and NVIDIA Control Panel agree that Monitor 2 now only displays up to 1920 x 1080.

    5. Unplugged monitor both power and HDMI, waiting minutes, and plugged in again.

    6. Tried uninstalling Fieldrunners.

    7. Looked to STEAM for help to no avail.

    8. Previous games that worked on Monitor 2 all all under the new display constraints.

    9. Tried to make a custom resolution in NVIDIA control panel but it came out all screwed up. Test view looked good but when I applied, it was interlaced and only filled 1/2 the screen. Even when I make adjusted to the custom resolution, it is blurry.

    10. Went to LG website, updated display driver, no change.

I know exactly when it changed (Fieldrunner 2, playing full screen at 1920 x 1080). It is as if the game won't release the resolution after it is closed (and now uninstalled). Something is keeping windows from realizing that it can go back to "normal".

Steam games in full screen keep resetting to native resolution automatically

Games won't run if not Native Resolution.

    Thank you your answer.

I have managed sort the issue out but it means running a native resolution of 1920/1080 on a 4k2k display. I have had no problems before then all of sudden my games in Steam just stopped launching properly.

The only way to get a game running was to set the higest that the display supported and not my preferred 1440p or 1080p. Mafia 3 gave me the option to into settings prior to loading game and the only way to give get the game to run was above fix.
