    Stop Hard Disk Scanning Loop


    Hello. Three days ago, at startup, the screen of my Dell laptop was showing blue with a warning that some hard disk sectors may be damaged, and that the system would perform a scan. Scanning started and a few hours later the laptop switched off itself. I rebooted but I noticed that the screen was still black, with sometimes an arrow prompt showing (meaning we are under Windows?), and I deduced that the scanning had re-started. I cannot exit this. There is no way a command can be typed. I have done that many times now: it lasts for more than two hours and stops. I tried to access the BIOS at startup without success. The manufacturer’s logo doesn’t even appear. I looked for a RESET button but there isn’t one from outside the cabinet.

    Hi Pranoti,

    For us to narrow down your concern with your external hard disk, we would like to know the following:

    • Were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue (e.g., updates, software installation)?
    • To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
    • Do you hear any clicking sound when connecting your hard disk?

    In the meantime, we suggest that you update all your device driver.

    Hi,

    • Have you checked if the hard disk is set as first boot device in the BIOS?
    • Which version of Windows is installed on the computer?
    • What did the HP supported suggested you to fix the issue?

    Are you looking to test the drive for bad sectors or for an actual active file system? And is the file system that is on the existing drive NTFS or HFS+ or something else.

    If you have access to any x86 hardware I would suggest getting a copy of Hiren's Boot Disk and using HDAT2 if it's a bad sector scan you're looking for.
