Windows 10: Stop windows update from waking up laptop?

I have my laptop set to go to sleep when I shut the lid. At times it seems to wake up on it's own while still shut and starts doing a lot of processing on it's own. It heats up a lot which causes the fan to run loudly and when I do open the lid, the screen is blank even though the keyboard is still lit and fan is going crazy. At this point I can't get any response out of the machine or even get the screen to turn on and my only option is to hold the power button down til it shuts off.I'm pretty sure this is because MS is checking for updates and maybe even installing them. I've figured

Can't stop machine waking itself from hibernation


My desktop machine keeps waking itself up from hibernation, usually during the night, despite my having taken all reasonable steps to stop it. I have:

• disabled waking on network, mouse and RTC in BIOS setup
• disabled wake on mouse and network in device manager (and checked with powercfg -devicequery wake_armed)
• disabled "allow wake timers" for all power plans

It doesn't however wake itself up from S5 (shutdown). I also tried leaving it in S3 sleep for over 24 hours and it didn't wake up, although that's not long enough to be certain that it never would.

Unfortunately my records in Event Viewer only go back a bit over a week to my upgrade to Windows 10, but I did notice a pattern in the first few days of waking at around 00:17 or 00:18 in the morning. Event Viewer suggested that this was due to mcupdate_scheduler, which was scheduled to run at 00:19, so I changed the trigger (following some instructions from Microsoft), but the next night the machine woke earlier, at 23:45. Unfortunately event viewer had no idea what caused that particular event. And today I have just run powercfg -waketimer and apparently there is a task \blah\blah\updateorchestrator\reboot which requires waking the machine just after 02:00 tomorrow morning. Clearly trying to change each individual trigger is a hopeless game of whack-a-mole which will sooner or later result in my wrecking something. How on earth can I stop my machine waking up?

 

How can I stop Windows 10 waking from hibernate to perform updates?

I have deselected Control Panel: Security and Maintenance: Automatic Maintenance: Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time, but Windows 10 is waking my laptop hibernated on
AC power for scheduled maintenance and leaving the machine running. I wish to stop this behaviour to reduce the risk of losing any unsaved data and to minimise wear of my laptop's backlight.

A similar issue in Windows 7 was addressed in Will Windows 7 wake up to check for and install Windows updates?,
in which:

• User 01 reported that he had a Windows 7 PC that did not wake for maintenance and a Windows 7 laptop that did wake for maintenance
• John_P. suggested that the difference in behavior is dependent on undocumented settings that Windows receives from the BIOS.

I had a Windows 7 PC that did wake for maintenance from sleep (on AC power), until I set a registry value to inhibit this. Unfortunately, this does not work for my
Windows 10 laptop.

Can anyone tell me whether there are likely to be BIOS settings that I can make to control this or is it determined by the machine's chipset and therefore beyond my control?

Problem: about 80% of the time, my laptop won't wake up from sleep mode via keyboard press or mouse move/click. I seem to be missing many common features in power plan too, even after fresh Windows 10 install.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Reinstalled Windows 10 (clean)
2. Updated all drivers
3. Replicated on multiple Windows 10 versions, updates
4. BIOS latest version
5. No USB devices attached, ever. Only USB-C power and bluetooth mouse
6. Disabled "fast startup" in control panel
