Stopping the 'Blue Screen' from 'popping up' for Win 10 'invasion'!

@Traveller11 - I see your problem. The current Media Creation Tool is set by MS to DL the most recent version, 1709. You need 1607. Use this. It downloads from the MS servers, the real files, just like Media Creation Tool. It's safe, been used by many here on TF. Screens look identical, you just need to select your version, language, bits, home/pro. Download the small app in this pic, install and run. Then download your ISO choice, and follow Slice's instructions using Rufus.

  2. No problem. Interestingly when you 'disable' in Task Scheduler in the Windows Update 'folder' it doesn't automatically 'disable' Windows Update in the services.msc listing.

Not supposed to. The Task simply runs using the service. It's just a job to be run, using the services, etc.

Did you see my post about the download? Post #43.

    Hi f14tomcat,

Phew! I nearly missed this one! Think you might have had the 'Afterburners' running! LOL!
I have now got the 'other' tool, Thanks for that, and spotting the error!

I have also got the file to use Rufus, so hopefully by this afternoon we will be making some progress!
    Cheers..........

@Traveller11 - There seems to be some confusion. Are you try to upgrade to 1709, or create an ISO for 1607?

    When Slice said:

Download the ISO for specific Edition, Language and Bit version that match your current Windows, using the MCT (Media Creation Tool download).

He was referring to Home vs Pro, English or whatever language, and 32-bit vs 64-bit. Not the version #. You are on 1607. The tool will download 1709. That's all it knows to do. That is correct if you are trying to upgrade.

  7. Hi f14tomcat.

I am trying to upgrade to 1709 and have got the download from the tool you provided the link to.

However I have had to use a different program to get the ISO onto the USB as the Rufus program was not very helpful or clear in achieving that objective.

Still the USB is 'prepared, locked and loaded' I just hope when I shut this laptop down and reboot that getting into the BIOS it has the facility to Boot from a USB!

    Cheers!

  10. Hi f14tomcat.
    Thanks for that link.
Having to reply on different machine as the laptop has for some reason when shutting down, decided to go into “Peparing to configure Windows. Don’t turn off your computer”!
I haven’t been able to see if the USB will boot up with the 1709 Upgrade on it yet!
Will keep you posted if and when if finishes what it’s doing!!!

    Cheers

@Traveller11, you don't boot from a usb to perform an upgrade. You don't even need to make a usb from the ISO.

An in-place upgrade is started with your current windows running. You mount the ISO using File Explorer (double-click on the ISO) to get a virtual DVD drive. On the root of drive you will see Setup.exe. Run that to start an upgrade. An in-place upgrade lets you keep all your installed programs and files.

The upgrade process is described here...
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

You should only need to boot from the install media if you want to do a clean install.

  12. Hi Bree,
As I didn't want a clean install and lose all the installed programs, then I am very glad that the boot option from the USB didn't work!

So now I will try running the Setup.exe file and see what happens there.

    Thanks *Wink

  13. Stopping the 'Blue Screen' from 'popping up' for Win 10 'invasion'!

    Hi again Bree,

Clicked on the ISO 'Win10_1709_English_x64' (Picture attached)

Got the DVD Drive (Picture Attached) DVD Drive (F).........

Clicked on the 'Setup.exe' at the bottom of the list (Same picture as before)

    Upgrade starts to run........

Then I get this screen: Picture: 'What needs your attention' (Picture 'Update 1)
Looks like it is going to change the display language?

After it then checks all the 'Updates required' it comes back with this screen: 'Ready to Install' (Picture 'Update 2')
Nothing refers to the Upgrade to 1709 while for my own peace of mind all my Personal Data Files are not as Microsoft would like, stored on the 'C' Drive.

Lets see what happens next which might take some time to perform the Install (Hopefully it means Upgrade to 1709)

    Cheers.........
Apologies if the Pictures are a bit 'messy' in their layout!

I do not normally go for upgrades but did one when 17133 and it's as sloowww as molasses - not sure if it's the bum build or the upgrade - but will be clean installing 17134 for sure - much rather re-install apps and copy from backup's than endure the pain of a slow system.. but to each their own. *Wink

Ah yes, you are in the 'two nations divided by a common language' trap *Biggrin

Your current 1607 install is obviously EN-GB, while the ISO you have downloaded is EN-US.
When choosing the language for your ISO in the MCT (or the 3rd-party Heidoc download tool) there were two 'English' options offered: 'English' (which is US English) and 'English International' (which is for the UK English install media).

I presume you want to continue using the Queen's English, so I recommend you download the ISO (again), this time getting the 'Win10_1709_EnglishInternational_x64.iso' one *Smile

PS: the EN-US one would upgrade you, but then you'd forever have to keep installing UK language packs in order to have the correct spelling for display language, spell checking, etc.. Best get the correct ISO.
