Windows 10: Stopping updates

Is there any way of preventing updates from installing? I have them paused for the moment until April 30, the longest interval I could set, but there does not appear to be any way to stop them completely and only installing at the user's discretion.


I own a recording studio, and after the last two updates, Windows no longer recognized my recording interfaces. Yes, the drivers are current; yes, I tried reinstalling them, and yes, I tried rebooting the interfaces. The only thing that restored them to functionality was to back out the update. I live in dread that this is going to happen again and for whatever reason, backing out the update wouldn't be an option, or wouldn't work. If Microsoft ever gets around to publishing an update that doesn't bring my business to a crashing halt, I will consider installing it. Until then...


Just FYI, the interfaces are two Focusrite Scarlett 18i20s and two Focusrite OctoPre expansion units. I forget the driver level, but it is current, according to the Focusrite website. The system they're connected to is an HP i5.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
