  1. Storage Pools - To Use Or Not to Use, that is the question.

    Greetings:

I took note of a post related to Microsoft's storage pool answered by "Greg Carmack - Windows MVP", which regarded transfer of a Storage pool from one system to another new system ask by another person. Greg's reply post was knowledgeable and interesting but the thread has since been locked.

I started to use MS storage pool for the first time. I use it as two 10TB drives in an external vertical drop-in HDD cradle set up as a RAID 0 striping. Greg mentioned that he would highly recommend not to use a storage pools having experienced or heard of failures countless times with no recourse to recovery. My question to him, or anyone knowledgeable on the topic who sees this post, is it still recommended to avoid usage of storage pools?

I have a QNAP NAS with 14TB x3 in a RAID 5 arrangement, effective space of 28TB. That is being backed up to the above mentioned external 2-bay 10TBx2 as a 20TB RAID 0 striping storage pool. That primarily functions as a backup to the NAS which is still only about 9TB of data. Would it still be recommended not to use MS storage pool on the external and instead use two independent 10TB volumes and divvy up the NAS data between those two volumes? My initial thinking is that I could connect the storage pool directly to my computer for direct access as NTFS volume, striped for NLE video productions and do away with the NAS all together. Thanks. Jerry. Tokyo, Japa

    :)

How to remove a bad drive in Windows 10 storage spaces pool

Could someone list the steps involved in replacing a bad drive from a Windows 10 storage spaces pool? I cannot find any info on the Microsoft support site that is specific to Windows 10. Also, could you list the steps to remove a 'good' drive and replace
it with another drive if the process is different?

How to remove external hard disk from storage pool on Windows 10

    Hi Velen,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern about removing the external hard disk from storage pool, we will help you with this issue.

Try the below steps to: Remove a physical disk by using Windows PowerShell
    and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows
key from the keyboard, type Windows PowerShell and select
      Run as administrator.

    • Enter the command replacing <diskname> with the disk name:

      • Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName <diskname> -Usage Retired
(If the pool is clustered, you will need to run this command on the cluster node which has the cluster resource for the pool online.)

    3. Prior to performing step 5, you must wait for all active repair jobs to complete. To monitor the status of repair jobs, type the following command:
    Get-StorageJob

    4. Type the following command: Remove-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName <diskname>

    5. Physically disconnect the old disk.
