I have this storage spaces pool consisting of three identical 8TB Seagate hdds.

Here is the pool in file manager circled in blue. Beside it is another hdd that's not part of the pool and it's circled in red.

I want to keep the 24TB pool but I need to remove the 4TB hdd. But when I do remove the 4TB hdd, my 24TB pool stops working and I get this error in the storage spaces manager.

I did not change USB ports on any drive, I simply removed the 4TB drive. I tried it while the computer was running and while the computer was shutoff. I even disabled the 4TB hdd before removing it and I keep getting the same error.

My pool is intact but unless I have the 4TB drive connected, the pool will not work despite the 4tb hdd not being part of the pool.

    UPDATE: SOLVED

Okay, my problem wasn't the storage spaces or even my usage of the manager. I am using a Mediasonic ProBox which is a DASnot NAS that has four 3.5" HDD bays that's connected to the PC by USB 3.0 or esata. Because of the way the ProBox is designedapparently the Storage Spaces Manager was getting confused as to which physical drive was drive 1, 2, 3 or 4.

My mistake was I had the 4TB hddcircled in red in slot one in the DAS. I had the other three 8TB hdds that were part of the storage pool in slot 2-4. But when I removed the 4TB hdd, the DAS apparently got confused. I'm not entirely sure why. I think maybe the DAS started treating the HDD in slot 2 as disk one and the HDD in slot 3 & 4 were still being treated as they were in 3 & 4. Which mean the storage pool was looking for a hdd that was incorrectly addressed. But I'm just guessing. I'm just a shade tree computer nerd.

My solution was to disassemble the storage pool and unallocate the drives. I then removed the 4TB drive and shifted all three unallocated 8TB drives up so that they occupied bay 1-3 and not 2-4 in the DAS. I then rebuilt the storage pool and now I can add or remove a drive from slot 4 in the DAS and it doesn't affect the storage pool. So, I will be replacing the 4TB with another 8TB and adding it to the storage pool. That way all the drives in the DAS will be part of the pool and I will have enough backup storage for long to come.

    :)

Unfortunately, following your suggested procedure it appears the Storage Spaces parity error persists.

  3. I have an HP Stream Laptop and I keep running out of storage space

    Hi Jay,

If a category can't show the folders that it contains, there is a possibility that the folders are somehow hidden. To maximize your PC's storage, follow the suggested steps in these links:

    Problem with Storage Space

Funny...on actually reading the title on that unrecognized status disk, it is titled Microsoft Storage Space. I was ust surprised to see it listed in the drive list.
