Windows 10: Storing Bitlocker key files in KeePass - text file encoding

Hi

Wanted to store the actual text files created by Bitlocker in Keepass. When I add them as an attachment, a dialogue box about encoding appears with a default selection.

I left the selection on the default but does this in anyway affect the ability of the key file to successfully perform a recovery.

The decrypted text file for bitlocker key was in c drive too. Will I be able to open the drives(I remember my password )

 

What is the default encoding for saving MS-Notepad files

When saving text files using Notepad, the default text encoding format is set to
ANSI. On the other hand, if you open a text file on a computer that's using a different encoding, the computer displays whatever the character corresponds to. A character encoding is a system that pairs each character in a supported
character set with some value that represents that character. Thus, selecting appropriate encoding format is considered before saving the file.

There is a good chance, the key was scrambled and therefore left unusable.

You better encrypt txt file as a standalone file, like with 7zip or with office software, they offer 256bit AES encryption.

 

Have tested the text files (.bek keys) that were attached to KeePass enoded with Unicode-8 (the default that KeePass offers when attaching a text file). These files transferred to a USB worked to decrypt the BitLocker encrypted drive.

I did not test any of the other text file encoders in the KeePass list.

 

comment - why encode it - just store natively. BECAUSE the keepass encryption (when file is closed) is still operational, and that attachment is not accessible unless you open keepass
