Mine is the only account on this laptop, its an administrator account and a Microsoft account. I am going to convert it to a local account, log on, log off, then reconvert it to a Microsoft account - see if that fixes the problem with updating. Another thought I had is to create a new user account (administrator account with a new Microsoft account) - perhaps that's the problem. When a new user account is created do each user have a separate windows update "profile" or is the same "profile" copied to the various users. If the same profile is copied to the users I need to know how to force windows to regenerate the windows update "profile" so that I start with a proper profile. My feeling is that the 'profile" was damaged in some way and that is why it is now downloading new builds. Incidentally I have tried downloading update in the fast ring and no new build updates appear or updates to drivers and other program updates and stuff. In the past when I made another user profile (around the time of the original post, not now - making a new user account in the hopes of fixing update) I copied various things and give permission to the new account to access certain folders from my old account, I also copied most of the appdata folder to my new account. Perhaps this is whats causing the problem. Will post if the local account migration method and back to Microsoft account helps.

Ok update. Nothing changed. I made a new user account (Microsoft administrator account) in the process I didn't realise that I did not join the insider preview program with that Microsoft account so when I went to UPDATE it said my device is up to date and also did not give me the option between slow and fast rings. It changed nothing, I should have joined the insider program with that Microsoft account but that just takes too long - the downloading and installing, it takes at least 6 hours on my laptop.
So now I change my Microsoft account to a local account, all goes fine, I restart and now want to switch back to a ms account. I go to the settings app and then account and I see the same thing I switched and restarted - no change to update, both slow and fast ring tell me device is up to date as when I disconnected my Microsoft account. I try it anyway, hoping windows will realise whats going on. it doesn't and I fill the password and other stuff in and click next - there has been an error or something of that sort.no option to switch to a Microsoft account. I remembered this happened in a previous build, that time out of desperation I went to the insider hub and then the option to switch to a ms account popped up, it did the same thing this time. I switched and then restarted, tried update first on the slow ring - up to date, then on the fast ring, up to date - even tho insider hub is telling me about build 10130 released to the fast ring. This problem with switching to a ms account from a local account leads me to believe my user account on this pc is corrupt or something and that is probably why update is not working for new builds. I think the only way that I can fix this is to do a clean install, not an inplace update. Whats most worries me about that is my laptop drivers, do I install the windows 10 ISO and then install my drivers or is it part of the windows install process to download my drivers and install them as it is busy installing windows?

Nicky Yes Windows will install drivers. But every laptop is different and I would advise that you have another pc to get online with
so if the driver for your internet card is not installed by MS you can go to your laptop manufacture web support and download one to a usb drive.
I am using an old Dell Latitude 520 since oct. done many installs and MS finds all my drivers. *Smile

Thanks Charlie, I have all the files/drivers already downloaded - previously (about 3 years ago) tried windows 8 (hated it) and returned to windows 7 then loaded the drivers. Final question - the reason why a USB bootable with win 10 thumbdrive is used over a bootable with win 10 DVD is because the DVD drivers may not run the DVD drive from the beginning of installation - well maybe at installation but they may not work correctly during installation? I remember I had a computer that regularly used to loose its DVD drivers - at anytime not only during installation. With a USB the driver is normally on the thumbdrive.

Thanks again for all your help. highly appreciated.

@Charlie - I don't believe this - windows 10 suddenly started updating to 10158 on the fast ring.

I have a bit of a problem, well more of an irritation than a problem. The library folders (documents, downloads, music, pictures and videos) in file explorer are duplicated. I have tried to deleted the files in one of the folders and its just like I deleted them normally. Ok, I doubt I should be posting in this post but where do I post it?
