  1. Strange issue when trying to shrink the volume of a drive

Hello. Today I'm frustratingly having a hard time trying to solve an issue trying to shrink a volume of a drive that windows is installed on, trying to take advantage of the free unused space to make a partition of it. It is a 953 GB m.2 that currently has 247 GB of free space on it. Previously 144 GB and shrinking it only allowed 1 GB for it. Is it not possible to increase the amount? I even went ahead and free an additional 100 GB of storage and I still can't reserve more than 1 GB despite the 247 GB of free space. The system is running Windows 11, on version 21H2.In addition, this site is

    Shrinking a volume

Thanks, Stefano. At your suggestion I did a Defragmentation on the drive I want to shrink. That took almost a day on a 1 TB drive. The drive is now 0% fragmented. But still I'm getting "wrong perameter" when I try to shrink the volume. Here's a screenshot
of the dialog window for shrinking the drive:

The amount of space I last put in to shrink was 50012. Any idea why that didn't work?

    Shrinking a volume

Hi, Dave. I followed your instructions. All seemed to go well, but Disk Management still reports "The parameter is incorrect" when I try to shrink the volume.

    Shrinking a volume

    Hi tfd3

    Close Disk Management

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd

From the resulting list, right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Paste this command and hit Enter:

    diskpart

Paste this command and hit Enter:

    list volume

(note down the number of the Volume you intend to shrink)

Paste this command and hit Enter (replace x with correct volume number)

    select volume x

    extend filesystem

When that completes, close Command Prompt and try shrinking that partition again in Disk Management
