  1. Strange OS refresh/intermittent lag within last couple months?

At some point in the last several months, but my personal PC (Surface Book) and work PC (Lenovo T460) have developed this strange lag, where it appears Windows (or something) is “refreshing” every few minutes.

I can be typing in Word, in an Internet Browser, wherever, and suddenly it’s like the OS is doing a quick refresh of some sort. There will be a little last for maybe a second or less, then anything I was typing will appear.

My personal PC started this months ago, and now my work PC (which I sure gets updates much later) started it about a week ago.

So now I’m fairy certain it’s an OS thing and not hardware.

What the hell is this and how can I make it stop??

    Random lag spikes

    Hi,

We would like to know more about your lag issue:

    • What browser are you using when you experience a lag?
    • Does the lag occur in a particular game?

In the meantime, we suggest you run the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Here are the steps:

    • Press Windows Key + X.
    • Click on Control Panel.
    • Select Troubleshooting.
    • On the left pane, click on View All.
    • Click on System Maintenance to run the troubleshooter.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Windows 10 intermittent lag

Hi, given that you've upgraded from Win 7, I suggest that you try some elementary steps.

The underlying idea is you may have an incompatible program running or installed, and to simplify what's running.

    a. Do a clean boot and retry the above.
    b. Make sure any AV or security program you are running is the latest version
    c. Use shellexview (free) to disable all shell extensions it reveals (it should hide MS ones by default- don't disable those).
Note that that program probably won't list all extensions - you could also try shellmenuview.
(Yes, these are context menu entries- I just had a strange experience with one with unexpected effects).

Note that there will probably be many other things starting automatically- to disable more, see Autoruns (free).

If none of that helps, try running Resplendence's LatencyMon (free) to check for DPC latency.

You might then consider your drivers- upgrading will have provided a new set of drivers. Some find older systems need an older version of a driver- typically a graphics driver- for compatibility.
