Strange update message and windows hangs

Left the office and when I returned a desktop PC was showing a message which I’ve never seen before.
First it says ‘Hi’ in white on a black background. Then it says ‘We have some updates for you’. Then it changes to a blue screen with the ‘Don’t shut down .....’ message. This sequence keeps repeating but getting no further even after several hours. Tried a hard reboot but end up in the same situation!

    Help please?

    :)

  2. What are these app notifications - Microsoft.Explorer.Notification ...

I am getting the same message and I also have Windows 10. It started in the last few days after a Windows update. One side-effect of this update is a series of strange notifications similar to:

    Microsoft.Explorer.Notification{DBB9C

Another strange side effect is, if I reboot my computer, it takes forever for Windows Explorer to finally appear. During that time my screen remains black as if it were hanging.

At first, I thought this might be due to malware, but every test for malware has turned up negative. I ran SFC and no problems surfaced, but the strange behavior and notification message would still appear.

  3. Windows 10 PC has intermittent network communication issues

I have a PC on my network that are exhibiting strange connectivity issues.

At some point communicating to network resources, such as Exchange, printing and file shares hang. The network card still shows connected, Exchange says connected but the Updating Folder message stays on the status bar. Print jobs hang at spooling.

rebooting fixes the issue, as well as disabling and enabling the network adaptor.

I've also attempted to disable power management on the card but it doesn't seem to help. No other PC seem to have this issue.

The network card on the PC is just the Realtek PCIe Family Controller.

Strange update message and windows hangs

    1) Find a flash drive that you can format ( > or = 8 GB)
    2) Create a bootable Windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
    3) Open the BIOS and temporarily change the BIOS boot order so that you can boot to the USB external hard drive
    4) Insert the bootable windows 10 iso into any USB port > power on the computer > boot to the windows 10 iso
    5) It may take 5 - 10 minutes for the iso to load while viewing the Windows icon
    6) Select language, time, currency, and keyboard, or click next
    7) Click troubleshoot
    8) Open the Windows advanced troubleshooting menu on the windows 10 iso and click command prompt
    9) This should open a box > Administrator: X:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe > X:\sources>

Use a camera or smart phone camera as needed to post images into the thread.
If there are any problems posting images then use one drive or drop box share links.

    10) Type: bcdedit | find "osdevice"
It should display partition=C (If not C: it should display the drive for the partition)
    12) Type: bcdedit /enum
It should display information that includes the partition.
    13) Type: dism /image:G:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions (replace G with the drive letter for the partition) (there is a space between \ / )
    14) chkdsk /r
(this could take several hours and it typically displays the estimated time)
    15) exit or reboot

    16) If the above is successful perform the following steps:
    17) Create a brand new restore point
    18) Make a backup image using Macrium:
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
    19) Place the backup image onto another drive or into the cloud

20 ) If the above is not successful there are additional troubleshooting steps

    21) Please update the specs in the "My Computer" section:
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums:
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums Site Use Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

FYI, these are the standard messages seen at first log in to your account after an update to the next version of Windows 10, While these messages are being displayed the User Profile is being updated to work with the new version. Usually this is successful, after the blue 'This might take several minutes... don't turn off your PC' screen there should be a 'Let's start!' one, and then you end up on the Desktop.

In you case it has most likely just been updated to Fall Creators Update (1709).

I left it running for about 5 hours! Was starting to worry that I had an attacker aboard.

Strange update message and windows hangs

Thanks a million to all who offered advice. You may deduce from the time gap that I’ve been trying everything possible. Sad to say nothing worked and I finally decided to bite the bullet and re-install W10.

No problem with installation, authorisation etc; just the time consuming business of re-installing all programs. Fortunately, I keep all my data on a separate partition so I’ve lost nothing of importance.

    Again, many thanks to all.

We are glad that you were able to reinstall windows and not lose important files.
    You are welcome.
Windows failures are often unpredictable and there are tools that we have that may enable you to save files.
They were not yet used in this thread.
With a new version of Windows installed this software has a free and a paid version.
Using it has saved many with unexpected Windows failures:
