Windows 10: Strange windows 10 specific intermittent internet connection

Me and my brother have came a across what seems to be a windows 10 specific internet problem. We have this problem about 3/10 times when trying to connect to anything. Here are a few clips of the problem and clips of it working fine (feel free to skip some of the video as it hangs for quite a while on some of them) :

Sometimes we can load websites fine but pictures and thumbnails do not load.

This happens on my brothers computer which has a fresh install of windows 10 and on my computer which I also reinstalled windows 10 (with windows media creation tool). I did not have this problem prior to completely reinstalling windows 10.

This problem also never happens when me and my brother use ubuntu. We have done extensive testing and we can assure you that it only happens on windows 10 (spent days making sure we didn't get the same problem on ubuntu).

Here is a list of what we have attempted so far:

• Calling our ISP, they said everything was fine and they referred us to Microsoft support
• Microsoft support referral call, they said it must be a driver problem and then said we can no longer give you support as the problem comes under advanced troubleshooting (which you have to pay for). Me and my brother both uninstalled and reinstalled our Ethernet adaptor drivers and it did not fix the issue.
• It cannot be malware since my brother did a completely fresh install of windows 10 and the first time he opened edge he got the exact same problems (he did not download or install anything)
• Switching DNS
• Completely resetting our router
• Disabling anti virus and all firewalls

Note that:

• all other devices (including another windows 10 computer) on our network has no issues with the internet. It only happens on the two computers that have fresh installs of windows 10
• Its also completely random and it does not happen on specific websites
• Our internet is about 35~ down and 1.5~ up consistently, it does not fluctuate much unless someone is downloading something on the network

We have ran out of ideas of how to troubleshoot this. Do you know what the problem could be?

Windows 10 intermittent WiFi issue

I'm experiencing similar issue with intermittent wifi connection loss...

On 2 separate laptops, one is a tablet.. My NuVision tablet with an Reltek adapter RTL8723BS Wireless 802.11, my HP Envy laptop with a Intel Dual band wireless AC 7265 adapter. Both these machines running windows 10 are experiencing intermittent wifi connection
loss, that disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet fixes the issue. I have the same issue on both machines on other networks, I know its not my home network, and I don't have any issues with other computers (Macs, Windows 7 computers and windows 8 machines
on the same network) I'm thinking this is a specific issue to windows 10. Its very frustrating because its intermittent... I've tried upgrading to the latest device driver software. I really like windows 10 and because these are touch devices didn't want to
downgrade to windows 7 but I might have to if I can't resolve this issue.

Hi, please try some basic things:
a. Clean boot
b. A different browser
c. ping some addresses you are experiencing problems with
- from a command prompt e.g.
ping What Is My IP? Shows your real IP - IPv4 - IPv6 - WhatIsMyIP.com®

(replacing What Is My IP? Shows your real IP - IPv4 - IPv6 - WhatIsMyIP.com® with your web address).

Report the time taken.
(Expect it to be under 20ms).

While your browser is attempting to access the website, get a screenshot of your task manager and post it.

Have you previously used the same PCs to access the internet successfully? If so, what was different?

Please complete the spec of your PC so it shows in 'My system specs' below.

There are reports of 'slow browsing' 'slow internet' etc on the forum, a quick look only found that one idea. There may be more- feel free to search the forum.

Here are some screenshots of task manager when struggling to connect to websites. I seem to be able to connect to most websites pretty quick atm but sometimes doest the loading thing which I showed in the video.











I finally caught when it does this weird thing of not loading pictures sometimes as well

 

The task manager doesn't show anything untoward. That's just one very basic thing.

Can you try the others please? Work thru my original post, answering each question.

 

I just realised I deleted my original reply which did answer all the questions so I got it back from edit history:

c.average ping ranges from 16 to 150 depending on the website and sometimes lose a packet or too from some of the websites. For example I pinged a website and got below 20 and pinged it again and got over 200 ping and one the requests timed out but no packet loss. But most of the time the ping was below 20 and no packet loss from most websites I test which was about 8.

My PC was successfully run of windows 10. What was different was that I upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10 but my windows 10 now is a fresh install.

My brothers on the other hand is a new PC and it didnt work even when going straight to edge with fresh install of windows 10. Whats interesting now though is that he has installed windows 8 (not sure if 8.1) and his internet seems to be working fine (yet to break or not work since few hours using it).

We are pretty sure it is windows 10 that is the problem.

I went to that thread and downloaded the tool and ran on optimal settings and it has not done anything. Even changing the MTU to the same as his did not change anything.

I dont know how to edit specs in my profile there is no edit button...

I also have a question, if I were to downgrade back to windows 8.1 would I lose my digital copy of windows 10?

When you say these didn't work, do you mean
- you couldn't do a clean boot / you couldn't use a different browser
or
- doing this didn't make any difference?

You keep your Windows license and can reinstall at any time on that PC. That's the simple version.

A possibility is compatibility of your NIC driver.
Try using the version you had with Win 8.

I can't tell if your PC is a desktop or laptop, custom or a manufacturer's model.
If the latter, you can get the driver from the manufacturer's site.

If you use an older driver, you also need to protect it from being upgraded by Win 10 (there's a tutorial.. please see the Tutorial section - search for 'driver' e.g.)

 

i did clean boot but it didnt do anything. Using a different browser doesnt make a difference still the same problems.

How do I find out what NIC driver I was using for windows 8?

my PC is a custom built PC from parts off amazon etc.

This is the driver page for my motherboard, it looks like they stopped updating it so they dont have a windows 10 section. Also the LAN driver on there is just an old version of the driver.

I also reset windows (and kept files) using their tool under recovery in the settings. I dont think it has fixed the problem because loading webpages can be slow and still sometimes get that thing where pictures dont load for some reason.

So you want me to use this old driver on the motherboards website (but im not sure which one i would even use because there is no option for windows 10) and then protect it from updates using this guide?

Hi, sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned Win 8 as you'd not mentioned that previously.. just the clean install of Win 10 (I was thinking of another thread). However, the principle definitely is right. Some people find that Windows' choice of drivers doesn't quite match their older hardware, especially if it's not rated for Win 10 by the manufacturer.

So when I think of what's changed in you clean installing '10?
- you may (I don't know) have a later version of '10 now).
- you may now have a different version of the driver (or even drivers).

In clean installing, of course you've also not now got the same configuration or programs installed. Well, seems you've eliminated the effect of 3rd party programs. Since it's unlikely to be Windows settings (by default), what's left?

A small freeware program DNSJumper helps here.

 

You did not mention, if you tried running CCleaner to clean browser's cache, DNS cache and etc.

You could also try scanning with AdwCleaner which is focused on PUP, not always detected by AV.

 

Already tried switching DNS which didnt work.

However my brother has done a clean install of windows 8 and his internet works absolutely fine, he is going to try and upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 at some point. Windows 10 just being stupid I guess. My internet if pretty ok atm as well after resetting...

Its just really annoying because we dont know whats actually causing these issues. I may do the same as my brother but I cant be bothered yet...

 

I have ran ccleaner which doesnt seem to help and I have also ran adwcleaner which also doesnt seem to help.
