Windows 10: Stuck at version 19042.572, in-place upgrade still broken

My computer was hit by the 20H2 in-place upgrade bug and the option to keep personal data is always greyed out. I tried the following solutions but none has worked:

• Changing version number from 19042.572 to 19041.508 by altering registry keys at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion]: With the change I could choose "keep personal data" option, but the upgrade process will BSOD at the very end and revert to previous version due to "data merge error".
• Uninstalling update KB4562830 "Feature Update to 20H2 via Enablement Package": the option to uninstall is disabled in Control Panel.
• Installing bugfix from Microsoft's December 2020 Patch Tuesday update: KB4586853 cannot be installed. Reported error 0x800f081f from Windows Settings. Installation of standalone MSU package via WUSA.exe also failed with just a simple "the following update is not installed".
  (BTW, basically all non-security update has failed on my PC with error 0x800f081f. Stuck in Windows 10 Upgrade

My computer seems to be stuck in a Windows 10 failed upgrade loop. I was running fine on a beta version of Windows 10, and then I came downstairs one morning to see it repeatedly booting, attempting to repair, then rebooting. The steps I've taken to diagnose are:

• Attempting to boot off a USB drive (with all drives disabled in BIOS) - this fails at the point of the blue windows screen
  
• Attempting to boot the machine itself and getting into "repair/safe mode" using F7
  
• Looking at the BIOS for obvious failures (e.g. RAM that should be there is missing) - nothing obvious is wrong.
  

I am fairly certain the build version was 9926. For many months, the system would attempt to upgrade, and then say "it failed" for some reason and roll back.

Suggestions for next steps?

That's a possible approach. But if I were to consider an in-place upgrade, I suggest a 19042 version (build 508 or 572).
If you have been running 19041.630, then the SSU is probably an 19041 SSU. SSUs are generally not uninstallable. So if 661 is strictly 19042 and you've got a 19041 SSU, that may be the issue. I wish you the best on this.

 

In-place upgrade - XP to 10 without losing the apps

Wolfgang, you need at least two steps (Vista & Seven) between XP and 10, the Eight can be bypassed:

• XP can only be in-place upgraded to Vista, not Seven or later
• Vista can be in-place upgraded to Seven but not Eight or later
• Seven can be in-place upgraded to 10
• Ergo: XP to Vista is a must, as well as Vista to Seven but then you can bypass the Eight and jump to 10
