    Stuck on preparing automatic repair when booting from external drive.


    I used external drive to boot windows 10 on my laptop a few times. Last time I did that, it shut down due to low battery. Now whenever I boot using external drive it gets stuck on 'Preparing Automatic Repair'. The laptop interal drive boots normally though.

    What can I do to fix this problem?

    Preparing Automatic Repair & Machine_Check_Exception

    We have an Intel NUC PC which will not boot up and has the "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen after which nothing happens. I read previous suggestions, but when I put the downloaded Windows 10 ISO file into an external DVD drive the disk will not run. I
    tried a Windows System Repair Disc in the external DVD drive and tried to boot from it, but it will not boot up either. Finally, I put the original Windows 10 Pro DVD into the external DVD drive and tried to run that as well, but it returns a blue screen with
    the "Machine_Check_Exception" message. I cannot get to a point where I can follow the recommendations of

    So what can I do to get this system back?

    Hello Sarah,

    I'd like to verify if you're computer is still stuck on Preparing Automatic Repair state. If not, I'd suggest to perform the steps below:

    1. Force shutdown your laptop, check first if your computer will boot normally. If not, after your computer restarts several times. you'll see the Windows 10 Boot Options menu.

    2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options.

    3. Choose Command Prompt, copy and paste the commands below and press Enter the after each line:

    • bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
    • bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    • bootrec.exe /fixboot
