  1. Sudden dramatic performance drop Windows 11 Alienware

Hello all. These past couple of days have been really hard with my laptop. I use an Alienware M15 R4 that's supposed to run smoothly. Yesterday, January 7th, I started noticing very dramatic performance drops including significant drops in FPS, and a big increase in underperformance. This is the only time this has happened, and I don't know why. I've tried doing recovery, deleting unwanted apps, and performing a clean boot. All of which were unsuccessful. I've also tried changing graphics settings in my games, which were unsuccessful. The windows apps I open are very slow, along with the setti

    Hi Vadim,

My name is Igor, I have 12 Microsoft MVP awards. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you. I'm sorry you have a problems.

I'd suggest you to not waste a time with this so called problem. This is drop in benchmark only not in real-time Windows performance. Such change is negligible in overall system performance.

And it may be explained by additional data writings during this period.

And I suppose it is better to check drives with manufacturers' tool - Samsung Magician and Western Digital Dashboard.

And you may ask PassMark Performance Test developers about factors they may or may not take into account during testing.

Please note, Windows is multitasking system so other operations may have effect to the tests. So it will be better to look not at single test result but to make several tests and and process the test results using mathematical statistics methods.

  3. Sudden dramatic drop in NVMe performance

    Hi Community,

I have the following setup: Windows 10 Pro 20H2, Build 19042.1348, Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0, MEG X570S ACE MAX + Ryzen 9 5950X, 32GB of TridentZ Royal DD4 (F4-4000C15D-16GTRG) and two NVMe's: 1TB Samsung 980 Pro (installed in PCIE_1 | CPU) and 2TB WD Black SN850 (installed in PCIE_4 | chipset). The motherboard is quite new and I did a Windows reset after installing it on the 13th of November, after which I have installed the drivers and the software I need. I benchmarked both drives immediately after, the results were OK:

About a week ago I ran PassMark Performance Test and wondered why my system drive was suddenly underperforming by a huge margin, so I re-tested both drives and saw HUGE drops in performance, retestet today for reference:

Those are dramatic drops especially with random I/O. I tried moving the NVMe's between different M.2 slots, the mobo has 4 of them (I have no SATA devices or anything else that could consume bandwith) with very similar results. I have not installed any drivers or any software that could alter disk behavior since my initial benchmark, also the hardware didn't change, so I assume it must be some Windows update which messed something up. This is what the history looks like:

Before I start investing a lot of time into trying to uninstall those one by one / do a rollback, I wanted to ask if anyone (especially Microsoft) is aware of any such issues introduced with some of the recent updates? Maybe any other suggestions on how to find the root cause? Thanks.
