Windows 10: suddenly "low frame rate" appearance to video playback

I'm on an MSI laptop, the GS60 6QD. I am suddenly having issues with playback of video files, either in VLC or the Windows "Movies and TV" player. All video looks like it's a low frame rate. There was a recent update to Windows 10, but I am not sure if the issues started then. I changed nothing about VLC or any general settings. Rebooting doesn't help. What's going on? Anyone know how to debug this?

Video is altogether harder to capture correctly in low light because of the frame rate.

A low light photo is captured by keeping the shutter open for long periods of time, as long as 1/3 or 1/2 second. If you're capturing video then the longest exposure you can get for each frame is 1/30 second, so nowhere near enough light will be captured for
each frame.

That's why videos in low light always appear to have much more noise than still photos in the same lighting conditions.

Have you got a system restore point you can go back to where you know the problem didn't exist. If that fails you could try to see if there is an update available for your GPU drivers

 

Oops, turns out System Protection was off for all my drives. I didn't know they would ship a laptop in that state. So no restore points.

Just a few days okay I updated the graphics drivers from MSI's own website, in fact did it with the guidance of an MSI tech support rep. The problem did not appear at that time. It suddenly appeared a couple of hours ago. The was also a Windows Update today, but I can't remember if the problem started before or after.

Just in case my video files are corrupted, do you know where I could get a test video file known to be good, in several formats? wmv, mp4, and mkv would be good.

I think Windows 10 by default has system protection off. Ridiculous move by MS. if you get is fixed be sure to turn it on and take occassional manual restore points.

I'm not sure on specific test files but YouTube videos are MP4 if they use the html player. I think you may need to be sure to of opted into the html player, just google 'YouTube html player' and there should be a link to tell you. That's a good test of video playback. I doubt all your vid files will of suddenly corrupted. As its a laptop, you could check the power settings and ensue it's set on high performance or something along those lines. Then turn the attention if need be to whatever update Windows installed and removing it to see if that alleviates the issue. Otherwise if still no good it could be a hardware issue, presume your still under warranty, if so harass MSI to sort this out. Could also be some kind of throttling, maybe a BIOS update via MSI website could help if your not on the latest one.
