Windows 10: Suddenly the defender has lost its power to truly defend against malware/phishing etc

Last evening from where I received this unique offer of $ 1 for brand new iPhone and the system froze after the initial splurge that"you are selected amongst Microsoft users and special offer for only 100 persons, who will complete the entry form:

After sometime I did use my credit card to pay the $ 1 but the system went on for with my CVV number open for more than8 minutes. I am sure anything could happen within this extended time and they could charge and use my credit card info for any of their uses.


The details I gatheedr are below:

The reply email was to *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and the sender was based out of NICOSIA CYPRUS. Their address :

Kennedy 89, 1077 Nicosia Cyprus and the company was connected to Digital Igniters Ltd


I would appreciate if this was a legit company with true offer or was an open scam/phishing expedition, since the link would not close for over 8 minutes, although they gave me an "Order number as 014000000000048664"

According to Windows Defender DDU has Malware in it.

Add DDU to the exclusion list either from there or the settings for Defender. Then you'll be fine. I've used DDU for years, and as-long-as you downloaded it from a reputable source you should be fine. If they offer MD5 hash checks that might be worth doing to make sure though if you're concerned your version is malicious.

Windows Defender notification of malware detection

Hello,

Thank you for keeping us posted and we appreciate your continued patience on this issue.

At this point, I suggest you to update the Windows Defender program and check if it helps.

To check for new Windows Defender definitions manually:

• Open Windows Defender.
• Click the arrow next to the Help button, and then click Check for updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Also, check if the detection is of the same malware file or not. Again, see if it is any specific program or a file you try to access which triggers the detection.

Additionally, view the log in Event Viewer to check if the malware is removed every time it is prompted.

To open the Event Viewer. To do so, follow the below steps.

• Go to the Control Panel and choose to click on the
  Administrative Tools icon.
• The above action will open up a new window of the Administrative Tools where you will see the
  Event Viewer.
  

You can view Windows Defender "Operational" events in Event Viewer under Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Defender.

Windows Defender was permanently disabled by a malware

Hi Robbie,

You would have to remove the malware first before you can turn on the Windows Defender again. You can use the

Malicious Software Removal Tool to eliminate the malware that entered your PC. Once you have removed it, you can turn Windows Defender on. You can refer to the below steps to turn on the Windows Defender:

• Select the Start button.
• Click Settings, then select Update & Security.
• Click Turn on Windows Defender.
