Suddenly, Win 10 desktop won't wake from sleep via USB keyboard/mouse

All of a sudden, my 64-bit Win 10 Pro desktop will no longer wake up from sleep via my USB keyboard or mouse. It worked perfectly for the last year, no matter how many power cycles it went through. I shut it down last night, but after I booted up this morning and later put it to sleep, it would no longer wake up no matter what I do. There were no changes whatsoever since yesterday; no installs and no updates. I've tried a few power cycles since then, but the problem remains.

I made no changes to my power profile. I do NOT have "fast start" or hibernation enabled, and I've made no changes to my BIOS settings. All of the HIDs have "Allow this device to wake the computer" enabled as well as all USB devices. No devices are set to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" enabled.

I've made no changes at all since the last time it worked. What could have gone wrong? Why is it suddenly no longer working??

    :)

  2. Windows 10 doesn't wake from sleep

Original title: Windows doesn't wake from sleep

I'm running Win 10 Pro x64 v10586 on my desktop. In the last week, my PC will not wake from sleep mode using the keyboard and mouse. Both are plugged into usb 2 ports and the bios is set for legacy support. The keyboard will operate without special drivers
and the keyboard settings are to allow the device to wake the PC.

Power options put the PC to sleep in 30 minutes. Allow hybrid sleep is set to On. Hibernate is set to never.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

    edit:

the event log shows an error when the PC is rebooted (to get it out of sleep):

windows failed to resume from hibernate with error status 0xC000221

Hi Thenin, and Welcome to ten forums.

Can you give a list of the hardware you are using? CPU, Graphics Card, RAM, etc.

Have you tried to plug your keyboard and mouse into a different USB port?

I've had this issue twice. One on a MSI board and one on an ASUS board.

I had contacted MSI support and they verified that the board itself didn't support Wake with USB Keyboard or mouse from sleep, yet it stated it could. It would resume from sleep with a PS2 keyboard and mouse just fine.

On the ASUS board, I had the USB Keyboard and mouse plugged in to the USB 2.0 ports that use the ASMEDIA drivers along with the ESATA port on the back of my board. It stopped waking from sleep, and come to find out, Windows update ran and automatically updated the drivers for the ports. So I moved the keyboard and mouse to a different port, and it's worked fine ever since.

You can always try a different keyboard and mouse to see if there are different results.

Hey, thanks for your reply, lmaneke!

It's a home-built desktop based on an ASUS Z87-A mobo with an Intel i5-4460 @ 3.20GHz. Along with it's built-in Intel HD Graphics 4600 video adapter connected via HDMI to an HD monitor, it has an AMD Radeon HD 6450 connected via an HDMI switch that's usually unswitched (i.e., not connected/not active). When active, it's connected to an HDTV, but again, that's usually not the case, and I haven't used it that way in at least a month.

The USB-2 keyboard and mouse are separately connected to a USB-3 hub that's connected to a USB-3 port on the computer. Since the desktop is not close by, there are no other USB ports I can use or try. That's always been true, and that's still true.

All that being the case, since there's been NO changes whatsoever, it's truly bizarre that it just suddenly stopped working!

Makes me wonder if there is a problem with the hub itself. What do you mean the desktop isnt close by? Is it enclosed inside something?

There is a remote chance that the power is shutting down on the USB 3.0 controller on the motherboard while it goes to sleep.

Wonder if you couldn't uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the USB 3.0 controller on the motherboard.

Are you using the Anniversary Update or the creators update? I know the Creators update is having issues with USB issues on some machines.

Thanks for sticking with this, lmaneke! I'll reply in-line...

The machine sits next to my entertainment center about 15-20 feet away. I run 1 USB-3 cable and 1 HDMI cable from there to USB-3 hub and HD monitor near me next to the sofa so I can control the computer without getting up. Two cables are almost too much as it is; I certainly don't want to run more. But I've tried changing the hub with an identical model and I've tried different USB-3 & USB-2 ports on the mobo without seeing any difference.

Two things: I've disabled the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" setting on ALL USB devices and ports already, and second, since I've made no changes between when it worked fine and when it stopped working, if the computer mysteriously decided to stop paying attention to those settings suddenly, there's nothing I can do to reverse that.

Well, since I can't think of anything else to do, I can try it and see...

Yes, I've read of many USB problems with the two updates you mention, which is one more reason I refused to apply them. I'm still running version 1511 and will try to stay with that version as long as possible.

I had no issues with the Anniversary Update, but now having issues with the Creators update. I had tons of issues with Version 1511, but I suppose every computer has their own issues.

In this case, if I was to have a problem like this, I personally always keep a spare Hard drive handy, and then I do a clean install on to the Spare Hard drive, then install all the drivers, and then test. If the problem is gone, then we know there is an issue with your current operating system has an issue.

It appears you have followed all of the steps needed to troubleshoot the issue.

I can do some research to see if there are any other solutions available

I found a solution! I reset ALL the power profiles back to their default settings, rebooted, then changed the power profile I use back to my custom values, and now my machine is waking up properly again!

    Woo hoo! *Tongue

Glad you found a solution. Yay.

Hopefully this solution will help others who have had this problem.

That would make sense. If the power profiles got corrupt somehow, always resetting them will help. Why didn't I think of that.
