    Al Capone was deliberately avoiding taxes. Lon and other Newegg customers are not doing that.

    Connecticut is over-stepping it's authority. And as one of the commenters on that video pointed out, this is a use tax. Use taxes are very specific in how they are applied. In Lon's case it seems the tax liability falls on the company the products were purchased for, not Lon himself. I suspect that @Norton and many others are in similar situations. But even if it was for personal use, states can not charge use tax on personal property that is not used for capital gains, thus the term "use tax", they must charge sales tax. Collection of sales taxes are the responsibility of the retailer and enforcement of such collections falls on the states. Either way, the state of Connecticut has no right or authority to collect such a tax in such a way.

    My understanding is it is only the retailers responsibility to collect sales tax for states they operate in. For everyone else, you are expected to calculate and pay your use tax.

    this is on newegg there is no legal compulsion for newegg to turn over that information

    newegg did this to save their own margins they were given two options

    either collect sales tax going forward, or voluntarily turn over purchase records they choose the latter because having to process and hand oversales tax would take a bite out of there margins

    handing over personal information without a court order even to a government body is ILLEGAL and I except somebody to drag this mess though the courts lest enough people tell the CTDRS to stick it up there you know where

    there is a on going case headed for the supreme court over this
