Windows 10: Surface Dock firmware coming soon to Surface Pro X

The Microsoft Surface Dock engineering team will soon be rolling out firmware support for Surface Pro X to enable users of the 2-in-1 device to directly run Microsoft Surface Dock Firmware Update. Currently, to update the firmware on Surface Dock, commercial customers can use any supported Surface device including Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro (5th Gen), Surface Pro 6, Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Laptop 3, Surface Book, Surface Book 2, and Surface Go. The most recent Surface Dock firmware released in October 2019 added support for Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3.

At this time, running Microsoft Surface Dock Firmware Update on Surface Pro X generates the following error message: “This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor.”

Upon conclusion of additional engineering work required to enable updating of ARM64 processor-based components, a new version of Microsoft Surface Dock Firmware Update will be released within the coming weeks. In the interim, Surface Dock will still run with Surface Pro X .

Modernized updating for your Surface Dock in Windows 10 Surface

The latest firmware for Surface Dock now runs automatically in the background and simplifies the process of keeping your Surface Dock up to date. For full details, refer to Microsoft Surface Dock Firmware Update.

The tool comes packaged as a separate .MSI file in Surface Tools for IT. Simply download and install the tool on your Surface device to automatically update your Surface dock. And of course, the Windows Installer .MSI file can be deployed remotetly across multiple Surface devices.

Requires Windows 10 Pro RS4 (version 1803) or later

It supersedes the earlier Surface Dock Updater tool, which has been retired, is no longer available for download, and should not be used.

Surface Dock includes two high-definition video ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 3.0 ports, and an audio output, enabling users to transform their Surface device into a desktop PC.

Surface Tools for IT Update for Surface Pro and Surface Laptop

We are pleased to announce that today we’ve released new versions of the Surface Tools for IT Pros with support for the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. This update includes new versions of the Surface Enterprise Management Mode (SEMM) tools Surface UEFI Configurator and Surface UEFI Manager, Surface Dock Updater (SDU), Surface Data Eraser (SDE), and Surface Deployment Accelerator (SDA). You can download these updated tools from the Surface Tools for IT page in the Microsoft Download Center.

Surface Deployment Accelerator

Surface Deployment Accelerator v2.0.8.0 supports deployment of the new Surface Pro.

Note: Surface Deployment Accelerator v2.0.8.0 provides support only for Surface Pro and does not replace Surface Deployment Accelerator v1.96.0405 which supports Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, and Surface Book.

Surface Data Eraser

Surface Data Eraser v3.2.36 adds support for the storage devices of Surface Studio, Surface Pro, and Surface Laptop.

Note: The Surface Data Eraser USB creation utility cannot run in a Windows 10 S environment. To erase the storage device of a Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S, you must first create the Surface Data Eraser USB drive using another computer with a Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise environment.
Note: Surface Pro devices with 1TB storage are not currently supported by Surface Data Eraser.

Surface Dock Updater

Surface Dock Updater v2.1.15.0 adds support for Surface Pro and Surface Laptop.

Note: The Surface Dock Updater utility cannot run in a Windows 10 S environment. Surface Dock devices connected to Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S will receive firmware updates through Windows Update and do not require the Surface Dock Updater to stay up-to-date. If you wish to check the firmware version of a Surface Dock, or to manually update a Surface Dock, connect the Surface Dock to a Surface device with a Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise environment.

Surface Enterprise Management Mode

Surface UEFI Configurator v1.0.74.0 adds support for Surface Pro and Surface Laptop and a new ability to generate a USB drive with WinPE that can be used to enroll a device in Surface Enterprise Management Mode.

Surface UEFI Manager v2.2.21 adds for Surface Pro and Surface Laptop.

Note: The Surface UEFI Configurator and Surface UEFI Manager cannot run in a Windows 10 S environment. Surface Laptop devices running Windows 10 S can be enrolled in SEMM using the USB drive generated by the Surface UEFI Configurator, or otherwise can be enrolled by upgrading the device to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise.

New Version of Surface Dock Updater Available

We've released a new version of the Surface Dock Updater, v2.12.136.0, available now from the Surface Tools for IT page at the Microsoft Download Center. This new update includes fixes for external display stability issues when Surface Dock is used with Surface Book devices and includes firmware updates for both the Surface Dock main chipset and DisplayPort.

Note: The updates provided by Surface Dock Updater v2.12.136.0 apply to Surface Dock only when used with Surface Book or Surface Book 2 and do not apply to scenarios where Surface Dock is used with other Surface devices. Surface Dock Updater firmware updates are cumulative. Updating a Surface Dock that has not yet been updated with v2.9.136.0 will provide the improvements of the earlier release in addition to those in v2.12.136.0.

In addition to the firmware updates for Surface Dock, installation of the Surface Dock Updater utility on a Surface Book will also install a firmware update for the Surface Book base of that device. This Surface Base Firmware Update, v4.0.7.0, is required to enable the display stability fixes for a connected Surface Dock. Both the Surface Dock and the Surface Book base must be updated to implement these fixes.

Note: Surface Book 2 devices do not require a Surface Base Firmware Update and only require the Surface Dock update for implementation of these fixes.

For your reference the versions and improvements of each component contained within this update are listed below.

Surface Book

Surface Base Firmware Update v4.0.7.0 provides support for Surface Dock firmware updates with improvements targeted to Surface Book devices.

Surface Dock

Surface Dock Main Chipset Unit (MCU) Firmware v049E4970 improves display stability for external displays when used with Surface Book.

Surface Dock DisplayPort Firmware v049E3D71 improves display stability for external displays when used with Surface Book.
