Windows 10: Surface Go BCD error on boot

I have got a Surface Go from a friend of mine. According to him one day he tried to boot into windows after and update and got a blue screen with an error message. Because he is not very experienced with computers, he asked me to have a look at it.



I was not really optimistic, but I tried my best. Now I am at a point where all my options that I know of are depleted, so maybe someone here can help with my issue. Any help is much appreciated.



Lets start with all the details and info I know:

• Device: Surface Go 4GB RAM, 64GB disk
• OS: Windows10 (Version 10.0.17763.107)
• Error on Boot: "The Boot Configuration file doesn't contain valid information for an operating system. File: \BCD, Error Code: 0xc0000098"
• The C: drive is encrypted via BitLocker with the key-protectors TPM and numerical password.

Now to the things I have already tried:

• Used a USB-drive to boot into the windows recovery tools. There the main problem of this post arrises: using these tools on the C: drive, Windows wants me to enter the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key for the drive. As far as my friend says, he never configured BitLocker and does not have the recovery key. It also does not show up on his microsoft account.
• I have tried various manage-bde commands, which are all useless, because they cannot operate on the C: drive.

There is also the option to "upgrade" windows from my bootable USB-drive. The explanation of this option states that files, applications and configurations are preserved. But I am not really sure if this would fix the issue and/or possibly delete some data.



So now I am in a kind of dilemma (I think). In order to fix the boot issue, I need to repair the BCD. But in order to access it I need to have the BitLocker recovery-key. The data on the drive is not too important, but it would be pretty nice if there is a solution which would not involve the deletion of it.

Could you provide us additional information to assist you better with this issue:

• What is the make and model of your device?
• Have you made any changes to the operating system prior to this issue?
• Are you able to boot the device to desktop with this error message?

This issue might have occurred due to corruption in the boot files or BOIS unable to detect your drive to boot.

I suggest you to refer to the below thread, check if your issue matches with the same.

If so, try the troubleshooting steps suggested by -.[Final]#[Boss].- and check if
it helps.

BCD errors and Boot drives

My computer screen went black out of nowhere, and upon booting up I received a Boot error and recovery message telling me that the BCD file is missing. I had previously created a back up of my windows 8.1, so I grabbed my flash drive and prayed. I have
checked tobmake sure that the USB drive is the preferred boot option, followed steps from numerous other posts with similar issues, and yet the same error occurs everytime I try to boot up my computer. Even with the drive. According to the menu, the usv exists
and is readable, and through connecting the USB to a different computer I can see that the files are all there and fine. Yet the error persists. If anyone has a suggestion I would really appreciate it...
