Following our blog post from December 6th , today we are providing further information on the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.

Starting today, the updated Surface Hub Recovery Tool (SHRT) with the Windows 10 Team 2020 update is available here for first-generation Surface Hubs.
This is the first step in our continued commitment to service our 55â and 84â first-generation Surface Hubs as we prepare to deliver the update via Windows Update and Windows Update for Business in the new year, as we do for Surface Hub 2S.
We encourage our customers and partners to review the list of known issues for this build prior to installing the update.

Important Updates on the Surface Hub Windows 10 Team 2020 Update

Today, we wanted to share some important information on the progress of the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update which started to roll out on October 27, 2020.

First, we would like to thank all the customers who have taken advantage of the opportunity to update their Surface Hub 2S devices using either Windows Update or Windows Update for Business, and more importantly, we would like to thank them for the valuable feedback they have provided on the update process.

To date, we have 70% of all eligible devices in the Phase 1 and 2 regions updated. While the majority of these devices were updated successfully, we have received feedback from a small number of customers who have encountered post-install issues. To ensure that we deliver an update experience of the highest quality, we have taken two important actions:

We have created a summary of the current list of known issues, solutions and remediations for transparency and to assist your team in diagnosing and resolving issues.

We have paused the Windows Update phased releases. Phase 1 and 2 were released per the schedule below and Phase 3 and 4 will be paused for the remainder of 2020.

Customers in all regions can continue to update their Surface Hub 2S devices using Windows Update for Business or using the Bare Metal Recovery image. For specific instructions on using Windows Update for Business to manage updating your devices, please refer to the Surface Hub Admin Guide. We recommend reviewing the known issues list as part of building your update plan.

We know that most of our customers require the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update for their 1st-generation Surface Hubs (55” and 84”) to fully update their entire fleet of devices. We continue to make progress on finalizing this release and will share more details as they become available.

Keeping customers secure is our priority. Surface Hub was built with security at the forefront and we will be actively monitoring new threats for applicability on Surface Hub. For customers who are in a state of transition between Windows 10 Team Edition version 1703 and 20H2, we will ensure those customers remain secure by extending support for Windows 10 Team Edition version 1703 through March 16, 2021.

We are committed to delivering the best quality update experience across all Surface Hub devices and to provide transparency on changes to our currently published plan as required. To that end, we will provide another update on December 18, 2020.

Surface Hub Windows 10 Team 2020 Update available October 27

Earlier this year, we announced the Public Preview of the latest update to the Surface Hub Operating System, the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.This update delivers on top customer requested features and brings new and added experiences to help customers configure, manage and collaborate on their 1st-generation Surface Hubs and Surface Hub 2S devices. Since releasing the public preview we’ve seen incredible reception from our customers who have installed the update and provided valuable feedback.

Today, we’re pleased to share more information about the availability of Windows 10 Team 2020 Update, based on Windows 10, version 20H2, for all Surface Hub 2S devices, starting October 27, 2020 via Windows Update for Business.

Availability for 1st-generation Surface Hubs (55” and 84”) is expected soon after, and we’ll communicate as it becomes available.

The Windows 10 Team 2020 Update is a feature update – which allows IT admins to control its installation using Windows Update for Business rings, similar to your standard Windows 10 update rings. Using these rings will allow organizations to stay current with the latest security updates and provide better manageability and reliability.

A new Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) image for Surface Hub 2S will become available on October 27, 2020 as well.

As soon as we have the update ready for 1st-Generation Surface Hubs, a new and improved Surface Hub Recovery Tool (SHRT) will become available too.

For customers using Windows Update, we'll be taking a phased approach and throttle the updates by regions/countries as detailed in the following table:

Windows 10, version 1703 (RS2) reached end of servicing on October 8, 2019, except for Surface Hub which remained in support. We extended support for Surface Hub to continue to provide our customers with security and quality updates.

As we roll out the Windows 10 Team 2020 update based on Windows 10, version 20H2, the last RS2-based security update will be distributed on December 8, 2020, at which point Windows 10 Team RS2 will reach end of service for Surface Hub.

Customers currently enrolled in the Windows Insiders Program (WIP) for Surface Hub and wish to leave the program can do so by BMR/SHRT their devices. Alternatively, they can choose to remain in WIP Slow (Once Windows 10 Team RS2 reaches end of servicing, we will switch to Slow ring for Windows 10 Team 2020) or Fast to continue receiving early features of the OS.

Prepare for the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update
The recommended update path is via Windows Update or Windows Update for Business. Customers that don’t allow their devices to receive updates from the internet and customers who wish to join their devices to Azure Active Directory or start on a clean slate can use the new Windows 10 Team 2020 BMR Image.

Important note on Surface Hub 2S:
When updating drivers and firmware for Surface Hub 2S, we’re updating drivers and firmware on both the compute unit (“Cartridge”) and the Touch-Display Module (TDM). It is required that both be updated at the same time to avoid driver/firmware compatibility issues. Customers should allow up to 60 minutes for the update process to complete .

Updates to the Microsoft Teams app on Surface Hub

The Microsoft Teams group announced the latest update to the Microsoft Teams app for Surface Hub recently on their blog. This update introduces new Teams features, brings back old Surface Hub features, and provides additional stability and fixes to the app.

Microsoft Whiteboard Integration

A feature that was recently introduced to Teams in preview allows integrated whiteboarding directly from the Teams app on any Windows PC.

This feature introduces the option to start a whiteboard co-authoring session with enyone that's in the meeting. There's no need to copy and paste URLs into a chat window or even invite users to the whiteboard session. The moment one user shares their whiteboard from the Microsoft Teams app, all users will automatically see the whiteboard in Microsoft Teams and everyone can work together. This isn't screen sharing. This is real-time, productive collaboration.

Whiteboard collaboration in the Teams app is not available in point-to-point Teams calls.

It's only available if you're in a scheduled meeting or if the meeting has 3 or more participants

From a Windows 10 Teams client the user will see a canvas and 4 pens on the right side on the screen:

You can also open the canvas in the Microsoft Whiteboard app:

On Surface Hub, however, the experience is even better. When anyone in the meeting initiates Whiteboard sharing, you'll be prompted to sign in to the app (if you haven't signed in before).

Signing in ensures that the whiteboard data is saved under your personal whiteboard and that you can continue to work on this canvas from any Windows 10 device.

Once signed in to the whiteboard app, you can co-author with your teammates from Surface Hub:

Auto Camera switching

The feature that was previously available only in the Skype for Business app on Surface Hub is now available in the Microsoft Teams app. Note that by default, auto camera switching is not enabled, which means you'll have to enter the Teams' app settings and set it to auto (configuration persists once set).

Additional fixes

Some of our customers reported echoes during meetings when Surface Hub joined using the Microsoft Teams app. This update fixes this issue.

If the account you're using isn't Teams enabled, the app will display a message asking your admin to enable it.

Incoming call toast behavior when the Surface Hub account is a delegate or when a call is being forwarded is fixed.

The dial pad is no longer displayed when the Surface Hub account is not enterprise- voice-enabled.
