  1. Surface Pro 2017, Win10Pro x64: Explorer crash Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll

    Hi:

I have periodic explorer crashes on my Surface Pro 2017, Win Pro x64 (it is fully updated; sfc /scannow does not reveal any integrity errors). The crash seems to occur periodically about every three to four days) after a Hello Windows log-in. It seems to involve Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll based on the below (from Event Viewer). It seems that it only occurs when the Surface is running on battery (it usually happens after I bring it home from uni). I have also created a crash dump which is here: explorer.exe.18980.dmp

I have been trying to get suggestions on Microsoft Community for a few months: here is the six page thread (no big insights but you can see the various fixes which have been tried: Surface Pro 2017, Win 10 Pro x64: Explorer crash (Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll)

I am at a loss to understand what the problem is here. I am glad to disable Hello Windows if this would end the problem. Thanks in advance for any help on this

When I look in the Event viewer I see errors like this:

  2. Surface Pro 2017, Win 10 Pro x64: Explorer crash (Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll)

    Thanks auggy!

I am installing now though pretty sure this is not going to do it: we tried updating the Intel driver (to 15.60) a few weeks back. Of course I will be keep reporting back, and again I appreciate all of your patience I really do appreciate it.

7-Zip is a very good program and one that I would recommend so I would say stay with that one.

  5. Just a small update: here is a new explorer crash dump. As I said, I get about three days between them roughly. I have not gotten any responses on this, but perhaps a mod could chime in on this?

    crash dump: explorer.exe.15108.dmp

Have you contacted Microsoft? You should be under warranty, correct? Or have you considered resetting your system?

  7. Thanks for the response.

I have had my surface since August, so I am out of technical support but still under warranty (well I assume so, I purchased it on Amazon). If I sent it back I would get a refurbished model right? Not too keen on that?

Getting some Microsoft tech support would be quite helpful, but I am not sure how to even get that started.

And I have never reset a Win10 computer. I assume that basically is like reinstalling the OS (and everything on this would be wiped out)?

Thanks for any suggestions on this!

RE: Windows Hello. I don't use it so don't know much about it. I reckon it can be disabled via Settings App > Accounts > Sign In Options. That's just a guess

RE: Explorer crashes. Maybe try this:

explorer crashes Solved - Page 3 - Windows 7 Help Forums

You'd need the version here instead of the version linked in the post:

    Puran Disk Cleaner Download

Try deleting desktop.ini files in Dropbox folders then reboot. (Clear include list and just look for and delete desktop.ini files in dropbox folders)

If the utility cannot detect ans scan Dropbox then it won't be of use. I don't use Dropbox so cannot test.

  11. Thanks Callender! That mainly seems to be about another cause, and I have already uninstalled DropBox a few weeks back since I thought that was the problem (it was not). I have also not installed Google Drive so not that either. Anyway will keep giving it a look, thanks!

I'd say try updating your graphics driver.

  14. Thanks Callender. I did do this already.

Is there anyway to see what the most recent version of the graphics driver?
I have an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
    and the driver is,
    Version: 23.20.16.4944
    Date: 2/4/2018
