Windows 10: Surface Pro 4: USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller Error 10

I've tried everything suggested in this thread to no avail. Windows is fully up-to-date with no updates pending. I've done a full system rebuild as well and it didn't fix it. I can use a mouse connected to the USB port in BIOS meaning the problem is localized to Windows 10. this fixed the Usb xHCI Compliant host controller Driver Error and now I have a Via USB 3 Root hub error... Any ideas?

Your solution worked for me, but at step 4 I was only offered a single option, 'USB xHCI compliant host controller'. I decided what the ****, and went for it anyway; it only took a few seconds, but in Device Manager the entry under Universal Serial Bus
controllers now reads 'Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0.96 (Microsoft)'.

I'm slightly baffled by the change of identity, but it works, so I'm more than happy.
