  2. Can i reinstall windows on a Microsoft Surface Pro?

    Hi Ernest Rocha,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Yes, you can reinstall Windows on a Microsoft Surface Pro. Microsoft provides a tool called the Surface Recovery Image that allows you to create a bootable USB drive on your Surface Pro. It's important to note that reinstalling Windows will erase all data on your device, so be sure to back up any important files before proceeding.

To reinstall Windows on your Surface pro 9 using a USB recovery drive, you will need also a 16GB/32GB of flash driver that must be formatted into FAT32 prior to downloading the Recovery image. See steps below for guidance.

    To download the Recovery Image:

    1. Visit the page to Download the recovery image for your Surface
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft Account
    3. From the list of Surface devices available, select the device that you need a recovery image for
    4. Please note that while you will only be presented with devices that are currently registered on your account, you will also be presented with the option to get an image for a different type of device. If you try to use this option, you will be prompted to enter the serial number for that device.
    5. Download the recovery image using the button on the page
    6. When the download bar pops up at the bottom of your screen, save the file in a location you will be able to find it.

Note: Formatting a recovery drive will erase anything that is already stored on your USB drive. Make sure to transfer any important data from your USB drive to another storage device before using it to create a Surface USB recovery drive.

    Format USB Drive:

    1. Insert your USB drive into the USB port of your PC.
    2. From the desktop, open File Explorer
    3. Tap and hold or right-click on the USB drive and choose Format.
    4. Select FAT32 as the file system and enter a volume label to name the USB drive, such as RECOVERY, and then tap or click Start.
    5. Tap or click OK to erase the contents of the USB drive.
    6. Tap or click OK when the format is complete.

    Create a recovery drive:

    1. On your Surface or PC, open recovery image that you downloaded by double-clicking it or right click then select Extract and then Extract all.
    2. Select the USB drive you formatted earlier for the location and click Extract.

Use a USB recovery drive to reset your Surface:

    1. Shutdown the Surface
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
    3. Press and hold the volume-down (-) rocker.
    4. Press and release the power button
    5. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down (-) rocker.
    6. Surface will start the recovery software on the USB recovery drive.
    7. When prompted, choose your language options and keyboard layout.
    8. Select Troubleshoot
    9. Select Recover from a Drive. Choose Remove Everything and Fully Clean the Drive. Recovering this PC.
    10. If prompted, select Repartition the drives.
    11. If prompted for BitLocker Key, tap Skip this Drive.

I hope these steps work for you. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

  3. Problem updating Windows Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 feature updates

    Hi,

I have manage to install image for Microsoft Surface Pro 4 by going to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...erecoveryimage and download a recovery image for Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

What I did to reset your Surface from a USB recovery drive was:
Step 1: Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in (hold down the power
    button for 30 seconds).
Step 2: Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port on your Surface.
Step 3: Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the
    power button on your Surface.
Step 4: When the Surface logo appears, release the volume button.
Step 5: When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.
Step 6: Select Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.
If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of the
    screen.
Step 7: Select the target operating system you wish to reset. This
refers to the current operating system installed on your Surface.
Step 8: Select Yes, repartition the drives, and on the next page, select Next.
Step 9: Choose Just remove my files.
    Step 10: Select Reset.
Surface restarts and the Surface logo displays while the reset process continues
    (this can take a while).

This always fails and I have to do the below which continues installation.
    Windows 10 Installation Media:

    1. Insert the Media (DVD/USB) in your PC and restart.
    2. Boot from the media.
    3. Select Repair Your Computer.
    Select Troubleshoot.

    1. Choose Command Prompt from the menu:
    Type in the command:
    Diskpart
    Type in the command:
List disk (Note which disk is your Boot drive number mine is 0)
    Type in the command:
    Sel disk 0
    Type in the command:
List vol (Note which volume is the EFI partition mine is 4)
    Type in the command:
    Sel vol 4
    Type in the command:
    assign letter=V:
    Type in the command:
    Exit
    Type in the command:
    V:
After you have assigned a drive letter Using Diskpart You can format the EFI partition:
Example: if you assigned a letter V to the partition the command would be:
    format V: /FS:FAT32
    Type in the command:
    bcdboot C:\windows /s V: /f UEFI

Now I have an issue that I cannot install Feature Updates. They keep failing to install.
Any ideas how to resolve issue?

  4. Surface pro 6 : cannot enter recovery, cannot reinstall, no drives found

Problem after trying to reinstall Win 10 on Microsoft Surface Pro 4

    Hi all,

I have tried to reinstall Windows 10 on Microsoft Surface Pro 4 but when it gets to Getting finished near the end I get a dialog box saying Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.
    I then try the following:

    1. Boot into your recovery USB and go to the CMD
    2. type "diskpart" then "list disk"
    3. select the internal drive: "select disk 0"
    4. list volumes: "list vol" and select the boot volume (should be ~260MB): "select vol 1"
    5. Then assign a drive letter to the partition: "assign letter=b:" 6.exit disk partition and "cd /d b:EFI\Microsoft\Boot"
    6. run "bootrec /fixboot"
    7. rename the BCD file "ren BCD BCD.bak"
    8. recreate the BCD store: "bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-gb /s b: /f ALL
    9. Reboot
When I get to step 6 I always get an Access is denied error.

Please advise how to resolve issue

I am using a Windows Surface Pro 4.

It should not be so complicated.

    Thank you for all help.
