Windows 10: Surface type cover - how to disable touchpad without disabling keyboard?

I would like to disable the touchpad on my Surface type cover. However, when I do, the keyboard also stops working. I would like to use my external mouse and the keyboard on the type cover, but not the touchpad. Is there a way to disable the touchpad without also disabling the keyboard functionality?

Step 1:

Attach the Cover to your Surface or the keyboard to your Surface Book.

(If you have a Wireless Adapter for Typing Covers, attach the Cover directly to your Surface.)

Step 2:
Go to Start

Settings > Devices > Mouse & touchpad.

Step 3:
Adjust your settings under Touchpad.

You can make some or all of these adjustments, depending on which model Surface and Typing Cover you have:

• Turn the touchpad on or off
• Have the touchpad turn off when you’re using a mouse
• Turn off the gestures for swiping from the left or right edge
• Change the scrolling direction
• Turn off the right-click button
• Turn off the double-tap and drag (tap and a half) gesture.

Disabling touchpad will depend on the make and model of your Laptop. Some models would have its own button that would allow you to disable/enable the touchpad from the keyboard. Other models would also have settings from its own driver software that would
allow you to toggle it on/off. Since you've mentioned that your laptop is Dell, may we know the specific model?

However, if you have other pointing device to connect on your laptop (like a mouse), you can disable the touchpad through Windows settings by following these steps:

• On your keyboard, press Windows + I.
• Click Devices.
• Choose Touchpad.
• Uncheck Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.

After performing the steps above, your touchpad will be disabled until you disconnect the other pointing device.

Touchpad can't disabled

If your laptop has a touchpad utility software, you may check if it has an option to disable the touchpad. For instructions please follow these steps:

• Open Control Panel.
• Select View by: Small icons.
• Open Mouse.
• Click on Touchpad tab.
• Under the Touchpad sub-menu, click Disable.
• Click Apply, and OK.
