Windows 10: svchost.exe - System Error

The other day, I downloaded and installed the May 2019 update (Build 1903) for Windows 10. After the update assistant was finished downloading the update, I clicked restart to install it. However, as the PC was shutting down, I got an error message that said "The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application". There was another error message that occured before that one, but I couldn't read it since it was quickly replaced with the one I just stated. After I clicked OK, the PC updated to 1903 and was successful. Every time I booted up my PC after that though, I got a Run Dll error which I resolved by disabling the process on startup in the task manager. However, I wonder if these messages are related.


I am worried because this sounds serious. A malicious user could gain control of my computer? What would you recommend doing to fix the issue or assure safety of using my computer again? (I have been using it for a few days since that message and everything seems normal, but I'm just seeing what someone who works at Microsoft recommends.) Thanks.

svchost is part of the OS, it just interacts with other aspects.

Isnt svchost a service related to programs tho, and not the OS itself?
Like for example, there are multiple svchosts at any one time for multiple programs.

Though i suppose that still suggests the OS is buggered at the core.

 

What does the svchost do?

Lots of Windows services are tied to the SVChost, and /or are listed as SVChost in the process list(s).

Unfortunatley with Vista, there's a lot more dependencies between the services, and thus you'll be FORCED to run more instances of SVChosts; unlike XP where things were more independent and you could disable more features resulting in less SVChost instances. That and XP and Vista are different.

Regardless of your Windows version, you can check out some service slimming guides or goto Black Viper's website and take his advice. Depending on your needs you may be able to cut down the amount of SVChost running, and save some RAM.

XP should never have an SVChost using 50mb. Vista however can.
