Hello. This is for a work computer on a building I work at. What would be the easiest way to switch drives without having to install and setup everything from scratch? Since it is a work computer, there are a lot of things that need to be done for the user to be able to do his work and it usually takes me a whole day to do this so I'm wondering if there's an easier way.

I need to do this on most computers here at the building that are stilling running with HDD.

Any help is appreciated thank you

Changing Boot Drive from HDD to SSD

    Trying to understand here.

Do you have Win-10 installed on a HDD and on a SSD?

If so are you asking how to get your system to boot from the SSD opposed the HDD?

If you don't get an option of seeing a boot option at the beginning of the BIOS process {mine is to press ESC to see boot menu] check with the manufacturer. There HAS to be a key which does that.

Another possibility is: If both drives are SATA just switch the cables and reboot.

Check your Configuration file and see if 2 OSs are listed.

As you can see here, I have mine set to dual-boot. Win-10 on a HDD and Win-7 on a SSD.

New PC w/ SSD+HDD, possible to have programs installed only on HDD?

Well, certain programs won't allow me to, i.e., Microsoft Office being the big one.

My plan for using this computer was mostly light office and image editing. I don't need to install that much programs in all, but it is just frustrating that a lot of main programs such as Chrome, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, etc. have to be installed by
C:\ by default since it doesn't specify where you can install them, and thus that takes up space quickly. I could try Junction and/or Symbolic Links but that in itself is a pain to figure out and try to configure one for every program.

So that's why I was trying to find a solution that would involve me setting the SSD for boot only and having Users/AppData/Program Files on the HDD if that was even possible, and whether that would take a new Windows install or not which I would be fine with.

Installing and configuring SSD with HD

So, if I understand correctly, you do not want to dual boot, but you do want to keep the OS on the HDD and in case of SSD failure, you will then want to boot from the HDD - is that correct?

    Yes, its correct.

As you said, in case of any issue with SSD, using BIOS/UEFI change the boot order. I got it.

    • What I need to do while installation of OS in SSD so that computer must boot with SSD OS only till the time I don't make any change from BIOS/UEFI?
    • After successful installation of OS in SSD, will I be able to see/access HDD data?
    • In this setup, is there any precautions?
    With Regards
