    Switching users vs logging out?


    Hello, i just added my brother to my desktop as a user and wanted to make sure that his background programs aren't running when i am on my account and vice versa. Is making sure that he logs out before i log in/not using the switch accounts option good enough to stop this from happening.

    Thank you for the reply.


    • Were you able to try “Alt key + F4”?

    • Is the Switch User button active?

    Suggest you to close all open windows and restart the computer once to check if that helps.

    How to switch user if the other user didn't log off?

    Hi Grace.Y-

    I'm Kevin B. Independent advisor and Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience about switching user on your Windows, let me help you sort things out.

    There are a lot of ways to switch user on your device:

    1st. You can click on the start menu on the lower left corner of the screen.

    - Click on the User icon on the left side of the start menu.

    - Click on the User that you need to sign in.

    2nd. Go to your desktop screen on your device.

    - Press ALT + F4 button at the same time on the keyboard.

    - Select Switch user.

    - You will be taken off to the log in screen and you will be able to switch your user.

    3rd. Go to your desktop screen on your device.

    - Press Ctrl + Alt + Del button on your keyboard.

    - Click on the switch user option on the list that you will be seeing.

    - After that you will be taken off to log in screen and you will be able to switch user.

    That is the three basic step to switch user on your device.

    Please share a few details:


    • What exactly happens when you try to switch users?

    • Do you receive any error message/code?

    • Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?


    I suggest you to follow the below steps to Switch users.


    • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del key altogether.

    • Click on Switch User.

    • Select the user with which you want to login.


    If computer starts up with a user other than the one you want, login to that user account and switch user to the account that you need and check.
