    Symbolic Link on C:\Users\xxx

Hello, Why is it forbidden to use a symbolic link on the" C:\users\me" folder to move all the files of the "me" user to another disk? I've done this before on Windows 10 with no troubles, but maybe I got lucky!

    :)

Symbolic link (Junction/s), how-to mklink? Please help with Junction?

Hi all, having been a member at Seven then Ten forums for a fair while I'm hoping to find a straight answer here..? Apologies in advance if this is too verbose.
Windows 10 system booting from (UEFI) NVME with 2xSSDs + 2 MHDDs for storage...

An application (Xperia Companion) which will not let me select or personalise the location for saving backups of my cellular phone data...

Think I found a fair definition of the differences at the Computer hope site which would suggest it's a Junction I need:
I want Xperia companion to save backups to F:\Sony Backups NOT the default C:\Users\GD\Documents\Sony. Would the Junction (link) allow me to to fulfill my wants and could someone please demonstrate the mklink commands needed?

    with thanks and regards,
    Dave

  3. mklink /D - symbolic link created but file access is denied via the link

    Dear support team

I use multiple disks (some network and some local some external USB drives) to save all my pictures (around 300 Gb).

In windows 7 I had no problem creating links from "my pictures" to the other locations where my data is stored.

In windows 10 (home) - I can create a link, but I get access to folders only, cannot open any folder that actually contains files.

    the code:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>mklink /d D:\Users\XXX\Pictures\2013 c:\Users\XXX\images\2013

    symbolic link created for D:\Users\XXX\Pictures\2013 <<===>> c:\Users\XXX\images\2013

When I try to access a picture (or any file) via the link created above I get the following error:

    Location is not available

    D:\Users\XXX\Pictures\2013\2013-01-04 is not accessible.

The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive.

    my questions

    a. what is the meaning of this error - is windows actually copying files when accessing via symbolic link?

    b. what is different between windows 7 and windows 10 , specifically was this option blocked? if so why?

    c. finally - what is the solution for this problem?

    thanks

    Symbolic Link on C:\Users\xxx

    Need help with symbolic links

    Windows 10, build 19041.329

I am trying to set up a computer with Windows 10. The problem I am having is this: After I installed Windows 10, I then followed the advice given here, How to move user folders to different location on Windows 10 | Windows Central, to move all of the folders under C:\Users\MyUser to D:\Users\MyUser. I managed to do this without a hitch.

Today, after installing more software on the computer, I notice about one dozen symbolic links in the folder C:\Users\MyUser that were not there when I did the aforementioned move. As an example, one of the newly existing symbolic links is My Documents. But, here is the problem: I cannot figure out to where these links are pointing! All of the links are owned by user System, not MyUser. In addition, the Location tab, cited in the linked article, does not exist for any of the links.

Two of the programs I installed, in an attempt to make Windows 10 more comfortable to use, were OldNewExplorer, see Download OldNewExplorer - MajorGeeks and Open Shell, see Welcome to the Home page of Open-Shell-Menu | Open-Shell-Menu.

To complete this setup, I really need to move the symbolic links to the D drive, or I simply need to delete the links and create the folders on the D Drive. Even though these links do not seem to have any files associated with them, I want to be sure not to accidentally delete any files. Suggestions as to a way forward, including any need registry changes, are sought. Thanks!
