Windows Defender Error 1058: can't start service

I've seen posts regarding similar behavior for Windows 7, but not for Windows 10. I've tried a few of the steps but some of them (like specific registry key updates) are not applicable, since the registry seems different than previous versions.

    Symptoms

    • Windows Defender always fails to start, gives "Error 1058"
    • Under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender, every option is greyed out
    • Can't manually start the "Security Center" service
      • Initially set to "Disabled"
      • Change setting to "Automatic," start service manually
      • After a short time, it reverts back to "Disabled"
    Troubleshooting Steps

    • Performed virus/malware removal
      • Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, HitmanPro, AdwCleaner, Kaspersky's TDSS Removal, Bitdefender, Spybot
      • Individually installed, scanned, and removed each
      • Found some adware/viruses that were removed
      • Nothing shows up in any scans now (seems like everything active was removed)
    • Checked Group Policy Editor/registry key for the "Disable Windows Defender" setting
      • Made sure everything was set to "enable" Defender
      • Still see symptoms
    • sfc /scannow
      • Showed some errors that couldn't be resolved
      • Seems to be missing critical files in the running and backup file list
      • I have the CBS.log that was ran immediately before posting; not sure how to attach it or if I should include a snippet
      • EDIT: just re-looked through the log output, seems like most of the "check failed" errors were for different shortcut files (Task Scheduler, etc.). Not sure how applicable this is now
    Possible Solutions

    • Download + reinstall Windows Defender to replace missing files
      • Not sure if this is even possible, given that it's a core system component in W10
    • Restore Registry keys back to default settings
      • Virus seems to have messed up several places
      • Nothing specific to Windows 10 online for getting Windows Defender back to stock in registry

  3. "Error 1058" error message is displayed whenever starts a exe or any windows builtin utility

    Hi, Aditya.

Thank you for posting your response. I understand the issue that you are facing currently, and we in Community will try to resolve your issue the best way we can.

When a service suddenly stops, you may receive the following error message:

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

You may also receive this error message when you try to start a service.

This issue can occur if the service is disabled or if the service is disabled for the hardware profile that you are currently using.

To resolve this issue perform the steps that are mentioned below:

    • Open Run command (Windows button + R).
    • In the dialog box, type “services.msc” and press Enter.
    • Scroll until you find the service that is stopped or disabled.
    • Click the Log On As tab.
    • If the service is listed as disabled for your profile, right-click the service, and then click
      Properties.
    • Click the Startup type list, and then click Automatic.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Your reply is very important for us to ensure a proper resolution. Please get back to us with the above information in order to assist you accordingly

Windows Defender Error 1058: can't start service

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

We appreciate that you have tried some troubleshooting steps. I will assist you.

Although, your computer accumulates junk files from normal web surfing and computer use. If this junk isn't occasionally cleaned out, it can cause Windows Defender to respond slowly or provides an 1058 error, possibly due to file conflicts or an overloaded
hard drive. Cleaning up these temporary files with Disk Cleanup might not only solve your 1058 error, but can also dramatically speed up the performance of your PC.

Note : Although Disk Cleanup is a wonderful built-in tool, it will not completely clean up all of the temporary files on your computer. Other programs that you frequently use such Microsoft Office, Firefox, Chrome, Live Messenger, and hundreds
of other programs are not cleaned up with Disk Cleanup (including some Microsoft Corporation programs).

How to Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10

    • Open the Run command with the blend of Windows and R
    • Type cleanmgr on the text field and click Ok to see what is next.
    • Alternatively you can write cleanmgr in the Cortana search box at the bottom of the start menu and click the same at the top of the search result.
    • If you have many drive partitions on your computer then select Windows C drive or the drive that you wish to clean using the drop down menu of the
      Disk CleanupDrive Selection.
    • After a while, the disk cleanup wizard for your drive comes out. If you wish to
Clean Up Files of Your Account then deselect the items you don’t want and click on
      Ok.
    • To Clean up the System Files then click on Clean up System Files button (you are needed to sign in as an administrator).
    • A small pop up opens up where you need to select the drive where your System files reside followed by
      Ok.
    • Now you view the whole wizard of disk cleanup. Select the files by ticking the checkbox to delete and click OK.
    • Click Yes when asked by User Account Control.
    • Upon the arrival of Disk Cleanup confirmation window click on
      Delete Files.
    • Again select you preferred drive letter.
    • Select or deselect the items as per your requirement and click Ok.
    • The selected items will be removed by Disk Cleanup.

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help

    Thank you.
