Windows 10: System freezes, pointing device problems

My PC is a Lenovo Z510 running Windows 10. Last night when I opened the Edge browser the mouse pointer was replaced on screen by (variously) one to four solid arrows (triangles) with a single solid black dot in the middle. These do not function like the mouse pointer and made it impossible to navigate Windows. I had to enter CTRL-ALT-DELETE to be able to select to Restart. When completed the PC worked briefly before intermittently reverting back to no pointer, apps were now freezing as well. I then shut down the PC and started after about 45 min. of off time, same end result. I next opened System Restore. For five consecutive days, including last night right before the problems started, a restore point had been created. The Description were all "Windows Modules Installer", Type "Install". After I ran System Restore the window stated "System Restore did not complete successfully." There was a suggestion to disable my anti-virus and retry, I only have Windows Defender. At the end was this statement "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x80070005)".

To add to the confusion and frustration, this morning I turned on the PC from Sleep mode and it will display the pointer as long as I use only the touchpad on the PC. When I try to use my Logitech mouse the arrows/triangles with the dot reappear. Should I try System Restore from an earlier date? Other suggestions?

That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

If you still have problems, please repost listing each specific step and saying which option from the tutorial you are using. Thanks.

 

synaptics Pointing Device Driver

Try Uninstalling your device first, restart and then Install again.

Step 1:

• Open device manager by right clicking This PC and select Manage. On the left pane, click the same.
• Under Mouse and pointing devices, right click the synaptics driver and click Uninstall.

Step 2:

Restart when prompted. Remember, Restart!

Step 3:

Install the synaptics driver again using the setup utility provided by the manufacturer

 

Cannot Create System Restore Point Because Cannot Turn On System Protection

In Control Panel/System/System Properties/System Protection, "Available Drives," all that is listed is "Searching..." No drives are located, so no System Restore point can be established.

How to fix?

I have an extensive active thread in another area of the community dealing with the failure of this PC to install the latest Windows 10 update. Prior to executing the next suggested step to fix that problem I need to create a System Restore point, so a
solution to this issue must be found before I can move forward on the major problem.

YES, I have ALREADY run the SFC Command as Administrator and the report was that everything was A-OK.
