    OK that means your Windows was installed using GPT disk layout.
    Boot the Windows installation disk, press SHIFT + F10 then type:
    mountvol U: /S
    cd /d U:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
    bootrec /fixboot
    ren BCD BCD.old
    bcdboot c:\Windows /l en-us /s U: /f ALL
    exit
    reboot

    this sounds more complicated than what i was expecting. if i don't want to see the windows boot manager screen when starting my computer every time and i remove this drive from my computer and the msconfig/boot screen would i have to go through this every time i want to put this drive back in my system?

    something i noticed is i can boot an external drive from usb without issue. this seems like it would be alot easier, right? i know i had to use a program when installing windows to the external drive. i think it was called win to usb. would i have to re-install windows again or is there a way to make this existing windows install boot from usb?

    Not sure what you did before but since you cannot boot into Windows, post #30 shows how to rebuild the BCD so you can boot. Now since your Windows was installed using GPT. Boot order need to set pointing to Samsung 960, Boot priority points to : Microsoft boot manager
