    System Image Backup Drives

I purchased a Toshiba 2TB external hard drive-I made a system image from that. I decided something did not feel right about the drive, the drive was an awkward looking size. I deleted the system image and returned it. I had almost 6 hours of back up on this drive and it was deleted like it was never on there. I tried to check the drive in a Linux computer but it was not formatted correctly and I even reformatted the drive to make sure all was deleted. However, I did not know at that time the only reason why I could not see this USB drive on the Linux was because of the formatting. I returned the the external hard drive to the store, I even had a tech at the store check to see what was on the drive and they said they could not see anything on the drive. So, I returned it. I then purchased another 2TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim drive and I made a system image from that one. Last week I had a Imaging Device problem in the device manager and I have done system restore from the Seagate Backup Plus Slim. And my computer should be seeing the Seagate drive but it does not recognize the Seagate and I have even done a file history on the Seagate, It is only seeing the Toshiba which I do not own anymore. I did have a concern that the Toshiba did not really delete and that someone was going to conspire in some way with the Toshiba External Back Up drive.

But, now how do I straighten out my file history to be seeing the Seagate Drive and not the Toshiba. Again the Seagate does have files in the file history, and a partition for iCloud and a partition for the system image.

    :)

  3. System Image Backup and Repair Disc on same drive

    Dear Sirs-

I am running Windows 10 Home Edition on an Acer E5 laptop. I just created a System Image Backup on an external hard drive (Seagate Slim 2 GB). I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate any help!

Upon successful completion of the image backup, I am getting a dialog box asking me if I want to create a system repair disc.

    • Should I create the system repair disc?
    • If so, do I need to do this every time I create an image backup?
    • Can the system repair disc be on the same external hard drive as the system image backup?
    • If so, how much space will it require (I want to know if there is enough capacity left on the external hard drive, or how much I'll need on a separate drive)?

Also, when I create the System Image backup, it seems to be taking up a great deal of room on my external drive. It is taking up large chunks, as if it's keeping all of the previous backups instead of replacing them.

    • How can I determine what is taking up all of the room on the external drive?
    • How can I get the backup to discard some, or all, of the prior backups?

Thank you very much for your help!

    System Image Backup Drives

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.
