  1. System Image vs File Backup?

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this, but after fiddling around with the Windows File System backup and having it run into a bunch of issues, I finally decided to get the Macrium Reflect software. Now that I have easier access to making a system image though, I’m wondering which path is the best: making a full system image or backing up the folders themselves.

I don’t anticipate actually needing to access the files unless the PC fails entirely, so I think an image would work, but at the same time I want to be able to transfer all of my files to another computer if need be, which I’ve heard the image has issues with. Any suggestions for one over the other and/or any misunderstanding I have with it (as I’m newish to backups)? Thanks!

  3. System images and backups.

    Hi Arthur,

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per your query, I like to inform you that; if a copy of C drive on any external storage media/system partition cannot be used for system recovery purposes. You need to create System image backup using File history.

To create system image on Windows 10 follow the below methods.

    • Type File history in the search area on the taskbar and select File history.

    • Click on System image backup on the left bottom corner of the Window file history Window.

    • Click on Create System Image on the left panel of the System Image backup windows.

    • Select the driver, where you want to Create system Image.

    • Follow on screen instruction.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

    System Image vs File Backup?

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.
