Windows 10: system only playing system sounds, nothing else

I'm not sure when this started, but now Chrome and edge and windows media player won't play sound, but system sounds work fine (both in headphones and on the speakers). I've tried resetting to factory settings, adjusting all the speaker settings, but I can't figure out what changed. Any help is appreciated.

System sounds won't play...?

There are sounds assigned, but I have absolutely no idea where they're playing out to! Probably because the machine also has a S/PDIF and HDMI as audio sources, but my LCD doesn't have built-in speakers to play sound from. I also have USB headphones, but they don't have System Sounds​ listed in the Volume Control anywhere.

 

No System Notification Sounds Play After Update To Windows 1809.

I looked here and have compared the desktop settings to the laptops, all are set the same, which are the defaults since I have never tweaked any of these settings on any systems.

These settings are the ones that didn't make any difference when I changed them.

Volume Mixer shows me volume controls for Device and Applications, both which are set to their maximum. However the behaviour I see on the desktop machine when sliding the "Applications" volume slider is that it does not make that "beeping" sound at any point. It only beeps when I slide the "Device" volume slider, unlike what happens on the laptops.

When I am in Settings > System > Sound > I even ran the troubleshooting steps which is able to play "Test Sounds" just fine, but the system notification sounds still won't play. However when I finish the troubleshooting steps, I see this notification with a yellow exclamation mark, which may point to the issue, but am unsure how.

 

System sounds play, but application sound does not

Hello! So, I'm using windows 10, and very often when i start up my computer, all sound but the system sound won't play.

I've found a solution that involved fooling around with the troubleshooter and switching the default sound systems around (the main one doesnt work, even though it says it's default, so i switch the default to the other setting, and then switch it back to
the main one) and then restarting. I would prefer to not waste time restarting anymore.

some other info:

- my headphones are detected by the system and they switch settings, but they don't play anything.

- the audio mixer shows things playing when... they aren't

Any suggestions are very helpful!
