Partition Type (id) different in Windows 10 Format vs Windows 7 Format

Partition type (e.g. partition id) is differently set by "Format" command (FAT) between win 7 and win 10.
Why is there such an inconsistency, is this a bug?

    • Format a removable drive (e.g., USB) on Win 7 (use FAT) and then check partition type using Diskpart commands. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is 0x06.
    2. Next Format the card in the removable drive in Win 10. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is
    0x0E.

This causes a problem as when we moved an application from Win 7 to Win 10. The SW does the formatting (via OS API: FMIFS.DLL (File Manager to Installable File System)) however the partition type on Windows 10 ends up different than on Windows 7. We
need (required) the partition type to be 0x06 as in windows 7.

I know that diskpart allows you to change partition type (e.g. partition id) via set id. However, I did not find any API to do that (i.e. change partition table entry) after formatting.
Is there any way to change only the partition id programmatically?

    Thanks

Windows 10: Unknown System (ZSystem partition Type ID :) Partition or Disk.

    Hi Leonardo,

There are several factors why you see unknown system partition or disk in your computer. It can be a recovery partition. For us to better assist you, we'd like to gather more information:

    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
    • When did this issue occur?

Meanwhile, we suggest to follow these steps:

    • Open a Command Prompt as admin.
    • Type in diskpart.
    • Type list volumes.
    • Find out which volume shows as your drive E: then type select volume N, where N is the number that the volume was given.
    • Double-check that you're on the right volume, type in "list volume" and check where the asterisk is. If it's beside the volume you wish to change, then good, if not you'll need to do "select volume N" again.
    • When you're sure you're on the right volume, type in remove letter=E.
    • Check it has been done by typing "list volume" to see the results.
    • Close the command prompt window.

It will let you remove that partition.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    System partition Type ID

Partition Type (id) different in Windows 10 Format vs Windows 7 Format

Thanks for the tip to post in developers forum. Yes there is a developer aspect to this as well and I posted in the developers forum with emphasis on the developer's aspect.

However, the fact that format in win 7 and win 10 using different partition id is not only a developer question and I think fits this forum as well. Why is there an inconsistency without any documentation as far s I can see.

You can format (as a user not as a programmer) on these two OS's and check with diskpart command the partition id (eg., lis vol, sel vol x, lis par, sel par x, detail par (to see partition id)). I did not find any explanation why . In detail I repeat:

Partition type (e.g. partition id) is differently set by "Format" command (FAT) between win 7 and win 10. Why is there such an inconsistency, is this a bug?

    • Format a removable drive (e.g., USB) on Win 7 (use FAT) and then check partition type using Diskpart commands. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is 0x06.
    2. Next Format the card in the removable drive in Win 10. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is0x0E.

    Thanks for the quick response.
