Windows 10: System process using 100% disk on Windows 10

After I had installed a new hard drive in my computer, factory installed Windows 10 on the drive, and updated to Windows 20H2 along with installing other drivers, I began to notice that the System process was using 100% of the disk. At first I thought that Windows was doing something in the background, like installing drivers or checking for updates. Then I noticed that the System process was using 100% of the disk all the time, even if I wasn't even doing anything. I looked on the internet for support, but none of the fixes I saw worked.


What do I do?

As mentioned above, you can add additional columns to the list of processes by right-clicking on any column header.

I would suggest adding Disk Reads and Disk Writes from the Process Disk tab

You should be able to identify which process or processes are heavy disk I/O users.

Should look like this (when sorted by clicking on a column header) -

It doesn't resolve anything, system process still utilizes disk at 100% all other applications are slowed down. After a while it finally stops, who knows what Windows 10 is doing. Then you start a program (at last) and guess what, the system process goes
back up to 100%.
