Windows 10: System reserved partition inaccessible due to permissions, but the volume lacks the...

Could not update the OS due to insufficient space in the system reserved partition.Mounted the partition through mountvol y: /s to try and clear some space.Was denied access after mounting, despite being the administrator. The popup suggested to manage permissions through the volume's security tab.The volume is FAT32. It has no security tab.It appears that I am now completely stuck. Is there a way out?

There are tutorials on that- see the Tutorials section- and free 3rd party tools that do that too.

And if you were to search the forum you migh find some of the many times these have been mentioned.

In a normally functioning PC permissions are there to provide a degree of protection from mistakes- and even privacy where there is more than one user.

If you were to either
- boot to a command prompt
- boot your PC from a live boot disk
no permissions would apply - which is fine if you need to do something very occasionally and exceptionally.

As an immediate (temporary) fix you might try adjusting the volume of system sounds:

However you might mean a different one- if so, which?

 

W10 System Reserved Partition Error

Have you tried all the suggestions above? If not, we suggest the resolution provided above. We also suggest that you follow the steps on this link:

“We couldn’t update system reserved partition” error installing Windows 10.

Recovery Partition vs System Reserved Partition

Thanks for all the info guys.

Both original & target SSD's are listed as MBR as opposed to UEFI. I may have created a partition unknowingly in getting the original/new unformatted drive recognized, but I don't recall taking any steps that Windows did not step me through.

Not that an upgrade to WIN 10 Pro is contemplated, but I suspect that having no System Reserved partition will not allow that to happen, after seeing how the original WIN 10 upgrade created a problem for some WIN 7 users that had a smaller 100mb vs 500mb System Reserved partition.
