Can't edit environment variable over 2047 characters

I am running the latest updated version of Windows 10.

Recent installs have increased the size of my path variable above 2047 characters.

In control panel I get the error "This dialog allows setting variables up to 2047 characters" when I change the contents of the PATH variable and press the OK button.

How can I change my path since the control panel won't let me?

I have enabled NTFS long path names in the group policy but that did not help.

I saw some posts suggesting that maybe powershell could do it but I am afraid of corrupting my path without a proven script or utility to do it.

 

System environment variable won't stick


Running Win10 Home on an Acer Spin 3, 64bit, i7cpu. I try to add a path to the system environment variables by:

1. Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Environment variables

2. The "Environment Variables" window opens.
3. In the "System Variables" pane I select "Path" and click the EDIT button.
4. A list of the current system paths is displayed.
5. I click the NEW button, browse to the path I want to add which is "C:\Python36-32" and click OK. The path "C:\Python36-32" is added to the list of current system paths.
6. I click OK and am returned to the "Environment Variables" window.
7. I click the "X" at the top right to close the "Environment Variables" window.

Now if I click the "Environment Variables" button again (end of step-1) and repeat steps 2-4, the new path I added in step-5 is gone. IOW, adding a new path won't stick.

What am I doing wrong?

 

System Path variable length problem


I was having a problem with Apple's SyncServer.exe (part of iTunes). It was choking on the length of my system PATH environment variable (2388 bytes), so I temporarily hacked it below 2047 bytes, and it worked OK.

BUT I couldn't use Control panel/System/Advanced Systems Settings to restore it to what it was previously as that complained that the variable was too long.

To quote MSDN:

Luckily I was able to restore my PATH by using regedit to change the variable Path stored at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment which doesn't appear to suffer from the problem of the control panel.

Is there any chance this will be fixed (ho ho).
