  1. SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on boot of Insider installer

    Hi all,
I have been trying to install the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build on my laptop (Toshiba Portege Z20T-c) with the following specs:
    CPU: Intel Core m5-6y54 @ 1.1Ghz
    GPU: Intel HD Graphics 515
    Storage: 256GB SSD

I first tried to update from my existing install of 20H2 (19042) to the latest at the time, 21327, however on reboot when the installer is at the first spinning dots bootup phase, it would freeze and blue screen with the error "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED", but didn't show a specific file or driver that was causing the problem. I then tried to wipe the SSD entirely using a GParted live USB and tried to boot the 21332 installer, however that gave the exact same issue as before. The laptop is able to boot the 20H2 installer and install Windows 10 20H2 just fine so I have no idea what could be causing this. If it helps, Windows Update gave the error code 0xc1900101 when I tried to update from 19042 to 21327.

Any help or guidance is appreciated, TIA!

    :)

    SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED boot loop.

The usual causes for the system_thread_exception_not_handled crash are
    • Insufficient disk space,
    • Device driver,
    • Video card,
    • BIOS,
    • Hardware incompatibility,
    • Faulty system service,
    • Memory,
    • 3rd party remote control
I have removed 1, because it is not valid for this.

What I would like to try is to boot into safe mode via the command prompt in the advanced troubleshooting options, you need to open msconfig via the command
    Code:
    Code:
    start msconfig
and from there go to the boot tab to enable safe mode.
This is a simple workaround for safe mode, but it usually works SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on boot of Insider installer :)

If this works, then we can almost for sure assume a system service or driver is causing the problem.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on boot of Insider installer

Installation media boots to command prompt

I've just booted from known working install media to see exactly what it does when booting. The sequence of events is...

    1. Windows logo on a black screen
    2. circling dots appear beneath the logo
    3. light blue 'Please wait' screen with circling dots
    4. a command prompt window (very briefly)
    5. the initial Setup page appears

Do you see steps 1-3? If so, it appears you have stopped at step 4, suggesting that something on the disc cannot be read.

Does the disc boot properly in another machine? If so, try cleaning the laptop's drive lens then try booting from the disc again.

If not, make new install media with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, either as a bootable USB, on an ISO that you can burn to another disc. At Step 8 in Option One of this tutorial you can choose between making a USB or an ISO.

    Download Windows 10 ISO File
