Love this error, especially when it happens during o.s. installation.... Take it from the top:

• Check the BIOS to make sure the RAM settings are correct (they are usually on AUTO, but it never hurts to look).

• Run diagnostics on the motherboard and CPU. If you can't find anything else, try Dell 32-bit diagnostics. Some or all of it will usually run on non-Dell machines.

• Run diagnostics on the memory. The memory test in Dell's diagnostics is good, and fast (it's multithreaded). Memtest86+ is good, too.

• Check the output of the power supply and make sure the rails (3.3, 5, and 12) are within tolerances (5% of rating).

• Update the motherboard's BIOS to the latest release (version 0902 was posted less than a month ago).
