Standalone 5G allows the Un-carrier to massively expand its 5G footprint, bringing next-gen connectivity to more places while paving the way for future groundbreaking applications

Whatâs the news: T-Mobile is the first operator in the world to launch a commercial nationwide standalone 5G network â¦ and with this move, the Un-carrier is expanding 5G coverage by 30 percent, now covering nearly 250 million people in more than 7,500 cities and towns across 1.3 million square miles!

BELLEVUE, Wash. â August 4, 2020 â This is some next level 5G. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced today it is the FIRST IN THE WORLD to launch a commercial nationwide standalone architecture (SA) 5G network. The move immediately expands the Un-carrierâs 5G footprint â already the nationâs largest â to nearly 2,000 additional cities and towns, brings 5G deeper into buildings and sets the stage for future groundbreaking applications. In other words, SA 5G is the future, and T-Mobile is leading the charge to bring it to life.

To celebrate the milestone and the arrival of 5G for the first time in hundreds of small towns across America, T-Mobile used drones to light up the sky over Lisbon, ND, letting people in the small town know â5G is hereâ. The Un-carrier plans similar celebrations in the future. Check it out in the video below:

Taking 5G Next-Level

The first phase of 5G has focused on delivering new 5G radio capabilities while leveraging existing LTE core networks and has been key in accelerating 5G deployment. Now T-Mobileâs new 5G core is coming to life, which in the future can unlock blazing fast speeds in more places, real-time responses and massive connectivity. SA, especially when coupled with core network slicing in the future, will lead to an environment where transformative applications are made possible â things like connected self-driving vehicles, supercharged IoT, real-time translation â¦ and things we havenât even dreamed of yet. In SA areas, T-Mobile engineers have already seen up to a 40% improvement in latency during testing, and that is just the beginning of what can be done with Standalone 5G.

In the near-term, SA allows T-Mobile to unleash its entire 600 MHz footprint for 5G. With non-standalone network architecture (NSA), 600 MHz 5G is combined with mid-band LTE to access the core network, but without SA the 5G signal only goes as far as mid-band LTE. With todayâs launch, 600 MHz 5G can go beyond the mid-band signal, covering hundreds of square miles from a single tower and going deeper into buildings than before. Thanks to T-Mobileâs ongoing 5G build, and by flipping the switch on SA, the Un-carrier has immediately increased its 5G footprint by 30 percent â now covering 1.3 million square miles in more than 7,500 cities and towns across the country.

Let the Maps Do the Talking

In what Verizon and AT&T likely refer to as âthe good old days,â they led in coverage and werenât shy in telling the world about it.

Oh, how times have changed.

Itâs a new era in wireless, and T-Mobile holds the 5G coverage crown. Adding the SA coverage boost to Americaâs first and largest nationwide 5G network, T-Mobile further dwarfs the competition. The Un-carrierâs 5G network is more than two times bigger than AT&Tâs and more than 10,000 times bigger than Verizonâs! Just look at the maps, and itâs clear why Verizon customers can only connect to 5G ZERO-POINT-FOUR percent of the time.

Building the future takes a lot of work. To make the worldâs first nationwide commercial SA 5G network a reality, T-Mobile partnered closely with Cisco and Nokia to build its 5G core, and Ericsson and Nokia for state-of-the-art 5G radio infrastructure. OnePlus, Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung have helped the Un-carrier ensure existing devices can access SA 5G with a software update, based on compatibility.

Intel to Bring 5G to Mobile PCs by 2019

Today, Intel announced it is collaborating with Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft to bring 5G connectivity to Windows PCs with Intel XMM 8000 series commercial 5G modems. Intel expects the first high-performing 5G-connected PCs to surface in the market in the second half of 2019.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) attendees will get a first sneak peek at a concept 5G-connected PC - a detachable 2 in 1 - connected by an early 5G modem and powered by 8th Generation Intel Core i5 processors. At MWC, Intel will showcase the power of 5G on a PC by livestreaming video over the 5G network. This concept is one of many stepping stones for moving the industry forward in what's possible for 5G-enabled PCs.

5G is not just another generation of wireless connectivity. It promises new opportunities for technology innovation across the computing and connectivity landscape from the cloud to the network and the client.

The PC is a central hub for processing incredible amounts of data. 5G is coming. Not only will it bring a substantial amount of data needing processing but also new experiences for PC owners. Imagine immersing in untethered VR from anywhere in the world, or downloading a 250 megabyte file in seconds from a parking lot. Or imagine being able to continue participating in a multiplayer game as you ride in an autonomous vehicle on the way to class. Radically different. eSIM functionality will be on display at Intel's booth in Hall 3 at Stand 3E31. As of September 2017, all of Intel's modem solutions for PCs support eSIM in enterprise and consumer segments. eSIM is an essential feature for connected PCs, and Intel plans to continue offering it going forward. Intel continues to work across the ecosystem to ensure our end customers enjoy seamless out-of-the-box experiences.

Intel is investing deeply across its wireless portfolio and partners to bring 5G-connected mobile PCs to market, with benefits for users, like high-quality video on-the-go, high-end gaming, and seamless connections as users traverse Wi-Fi and cellular networks. AT&T Bringing 5G to More U.S. Cities in 2018

AT&T* plans to begin introducing mobile 5G to customers in a dozen cities this year, and today we’re adding Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C. and Oklahoma City as the next three identified cities for our buildout. These cities will join our previously announced cities of Dallas, Atlanta, and Waco.

We’re deliberately launching with a mix of big and mid-sized cities. One competitor recently boasted “New York matters more than Waco” when discussing their future plans. We politely disagree – all Americans should have access to next-gen connectivity to avoid a new digital divide.

Our foundational 5G Evolution technology is now live in more than 140 markets, reaching at least 400+ markets this year. 5G Evolution markets are locations where we’ve deployed the latest technologies that enable peak theoretical wireless speeds of at least 400 megabits per second1 on capable devices.

Also, LTE-LAA launched for AT&T in parts of 8 new markets today – Austin, Dallas, Houston, Little Rock, San Antonio, San Jose, Tampa, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, bringing us to a total of 15 markets. We previously launched LTE-LAA in parts of Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, McAllen, San Francisco, and Sacramento. With LTE-LAA, the network has peak theoretical wireless speeds reaching up to 1 gigabit per second2 on capable devices.

We stood with the global wireless industry when 3GPP agreed on the first set of 5G standards a few weeks ago.
