Taking ownership of old windows Recycle Bin files turns them into shortcuts to my current...

Hello, I'm having trouble restoring old recycle bin files, everywhere I look it says to take ownership.
So I go to the avanced tab and give myself full control, apply, and the S-1-5-etc file turns into a shortcut to my recycle bin which has nothing extra in it, and then I can't do anything because I can't even change its properties. This already happened to one file and I'm afraid doing this will lose me the files, and even if it doesn't, how could I access them?

Is there any way of dealing with this through windows? I do not have a pen drive at the moment to create a bootable linux and try from there, and I'm not even sure if that would work.

I've attached a picture. As you can see, the file I "ruined" still has a modified date of 2017, while my actual recycle bin says 2021. This gives me a little hope, but I'm clueless.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    :)

    recycle bin

    Hi George,

To prevent your files from being deleted from the Recycle Bin, we suggest increasing the maximum file size your Recycle Bin can keep by following the steps below:

    • Right click on the Recycle Bin icon.
    • Under the Settings for selected location, select Custom size.
    • Fill up the box for your allotted maximum file size for your Recycle Bin.
Let us know if you need further assistance.

  3. recycle bin

Interesting... never done that myself, & Windows Server 2003 (OS I currently use) does not have that option on the menu of the popup menu that appears @ least (perhaps in the PROPERTIES dialog is what you meant?)

Another "odd way" to POSSIBLY get this back, would be to run Explorer.exe, & be on MY COMPUTER @ the top in the left-hand side panel (treelist of drives/directories-folders & files etc.) & SEE IF RECYCLE BIN IS IN THE LOWER END OF THAT LIST HERE!

Then, left click on it, drag it to your desktop, & do "create shortcut here" & that might cut it as well, but kind of HOKEY, lol, but SHOULD work!
