Taking up more space with each installation try

I've tried to update my laptop from W7 to W10 for the last 2 days. Each time I try my laptop redownloads and tries a reinstall. With each redownload more space is taken up on my C: drive to the point now that I don't have enough memory to try another update. How can I clear out this newly taken up space to try another install?

    :)

  2. System32.dll files are taking up more space in Windows 10 C: drive.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

System32 folder contains core operating system files in the C: drive or the drive where operating system is installed on.
System32.dll files are those files which Windows needs for protecting and backing up the system files. Your PC will not face any performance issue if you delete these files from the PC.

I suggest you to optimize the drives of your PC by following the steps below and check if the space of the drives will be reduced.

    • Open File Explorer by pressing
      Windows logo + E
      keys on the keyboard.

    • From the left side panel click on This PC and open
      Properties by right-clicking on SSD.

    • Click on Tools tab and select
      Optimize
      under Optimize and defragment drive.

    • You can also analyze the drive by click on the
      Analyze
      option from the same window.

Write back to us with the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

    strange..

Use the built in windows Disk Cleanup utility and select the "Remove system files" option (or something like that, can't remember exactly what the option is, but it's right on the front window). You can find the Disk Cleanup utility under either Windows Accessories or Windows Administrator Tools - again, can't remember which.

Then try doing the upgrade with the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool:

On Windows 7 looks like it is under Accessories -> System Tools.

When it runs, it will stall for a minute or two "calculating", then you click the option for system files or update files, then it will close and reopen and stall again for a minute or two before it presents a list of what to remove. I just click everything on the list.

I went through the Disk Cleanup before posting here and cleaned out a few things. I don't recall anything called "Remove system files" but I don't see it there now. If I had selected it previously to clean out then I would have more room on my hard drive now.

Might have to run as administrator, maybe, to get it? It's Clean up system files.
