Windows 10: tar.exe for Windows 10 is not working

Tar.exe bsdtar shipped with Windows 10 is not working

When I am trying to run tar.exe -xvf archive.tar.gz in a terminal there will be no output at all and tar.exe seems to be not responsive.

When I am trying to run tar -czvf whatever.tar.gz \path\to\folder there be an error


tar.exe: whatever.tar.gz: Couldn't find file: Invalid argument

tar.exe: Error exit delayed from previous errors.


This behavior is abnormal because in other Windows or Linux machines those commands can be running without any problems

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.
