Windows 10: Task manager often blocked

Have never been a fan of the Task manager in Windows10, it's terribly slow to open

And clearly has been a pain for some people for a while too. I Don't know if this solution helps anyone.

1. in an elevated /admin console, run powershell

2. get-process explorer stop-process


This locates all explorer processes, which includes the default windows desktop manager itself, and kills them, after a while the default desktop re-appears because it's kicked into life again by a watchdog someplace in the login services.


Not sure what resource lock is breaking task manager, it's likely a plugin/hook into the explorer plumbing. Disappointing side effect though to cause Task Manager to Hang. The old task manager had no such dependency problems.

If you don't wanna reformat, I suggest running HijackThis!, analyzing it here and using it to block processes.

 

Windows 10 - cannot add exec to Startup in Task Manager

I purchased a new computer with Windows 10 already installed. I am trying to add an exec to the startup list but Win10 will not accept it. The exec runs successfully on my Windows 10 machine if I start it manually.

Steps I've taken: Task Manager, Startup Tab, File>Run New Task. (browse to location, select.) It will start immediately, but does not show up on the list to autostart, nor does it start on reboot.

Any suggestions?
