Microsoft still haven't fixed the problem of the taskbar internet icon showing not connected when in fact you are connected after the most recent large update.

I notice most of the moderators on here including yourself give out a lot of troubleshooting advice about this issue that doesn't work. Nor does Windows troubleshooting work. It just resets the internet but doesn't fix the icon issue which seems to affect some software that relies on this status to operate.

Here is what works for anyone who stumbles on this after wasting hours like I did. I don't know why it works but it does. I am not a Tech but why hasn't Microsoft fixed this as the issue has been around for so long and I hold my breath everytime Windows 10 updates. I have saved this fix in Dropbox because I have had to refer to it more than once and I shouldn't have to keep repairing WIndows myself. How would someone less able to search the Internet and implement this fix be able to cope ?

    Run regedit
    Go to this key

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet]

    Click on "EnableActiveProbing"

Change value from 0 to 1 and reboot.

Can you please let ALL your colleagues know about this so they don't waste any more users' time and also pass this on to MIcrosoft so they can fix it ! I appreciate you are a volunteer and are doing a job that Microsoft should be paying you for. We users are sick to death of something breaking for thousands of users every single time Microsoft does a major update Windows 10.

If you are getting an "exasperated" vibe then you have picked it correctly.

    :)

    • Have you tried connecting to the router with a wired connection? If yes, does it behave the same way?
